    Default Stupid Question time...

I have been asked to make some shelves for someone, generally I don't make shelves lol. I have it all sorted made up a real rough one so I can draw up some plans ect but I have no idea what to put on the back so it can attach to the wall (hubby is no help to me).
I have uploaded a picture of my scrap / first ever try of a shelf just so you can see the type of shelf I am doing

stupid answer to stupid question 'a 4inch nail'
seriously it will depend on the weight it will carry and the wall it will be attached to. there are many options once that has been sorted

Well done, Natty. The stars are a great feature.

Would a couple of hooks be a start to answering your question?

I agree with Pete. It will depend on the weight it is expected to carry and the material it is being attached to. A sturdy hanging method which will suit a number of wall types will be a french cleat (Google image it). You could move the back (where the stars are) forward the thickness of the french cleat so that the top shelf sits flush against the wall surface. The sides can be the same depth as the top shelf and they too will sit flush with the wall face, leaving a small cavity behind to conceal the cleat.

As a design element I would suggest cutting the front edge of the top shelf to match the angle of your side supports.

    Cheers

    This is what you want.
Home Hardware - Double Keyhole Hanger
    Its a keyhole hanger.
You can rebate it into the vertical sides (anywhere really on your design as long as 2 beams apart) with a hole behind for the screwhead that goes in the wall.
Put 2 round headed screws in the wall and then slide it over and down a bit.
    All hung.

You don't need these double ones but single ones are also available.
Maybe try and find an old bed on the side of the road, they used these a lot to join the rails to the bedhead and foot.

    Another way, Natty.
You could do a split 45deg...one half on the wall & the other half of the shelf with a packer to keep the shelf level....
    Cheers, crowie

PS - Good looking shelf....well done.
