Thread: suppliers of thin wood

Hi everyone, finally got the DeWalt from New Zealand, and after a bit of a false start, all OK, up and running.

My problem now is I don't know where to buy 'sheets' (is that the right term?) of different types of wood for fretwork. Ideally I'd want 1/8" or 1/4" thick sheets, up to 2 feet width. Plywood is easy to find, but flakes and looks crappy, and pine can be found (sort of), but not what I want. Been to local building suppliers etc, but just way to thick (and I don't have a thicknesser) for what I want. Found sites in America, like Jeff Zaffino's one, and he sells exactly what I'm after, but I think freight costs would be huge.

Any help at all please?! I'm in Canberra by the way.

One option is the Lumber Bunker. They advertise small boards of different timbers at 10mm thick but I imagine they may be able to thickness these down to what you want. They seem to get positive feedback on this forum for their customer service so would be worth talking to them and they have an online service so getting timber to Canberra would not be a problem.

Threr is a timber place in Gympie Qld that sells all manner of thin boards esp. for scroll sawing, can't remember the name though.(Alzhiemers catching up)

Sounds good, but it's a supplier in Illinois..... USA.... that could get a bit pricey ones you add shipping costs, considering it costs about 7 bucks for a magazine!
Also noticed they didn't update their site a while, so I wonder if the prices are still good?

I have met Mrs Thin Timbers (I live nearby), but have not ordered from them. Small family business and wood enthusiasts themselves.

Apparently they have a large range of timbers and cut and mill to suit your needs. I have no commercial association with them etc, etc.

Ryanclan... that'd be Reg? If so.... he's also down here in Vic and has bought some pine same place I get mine now.
Wonder why there are no suppliers for other woods down here for us scrollers?

J&C Thin timbers are very good to deal with. I get box making timber from them in 8 and 10mm and have been very happy with their service. Good range too.

If you go to the Kiama Wood show this weekend,one of their guys is a top notch scroller,won quite a few prizes in shows and I think he won last years Scrollers turnout in Adelaide with a model of the Queens coach or some such.

on a slightly different tangent I have found the best purchase I made after the scrollsaw was a thicknesser. A ryobi and it makes life easier as I can get offcuts or recycled planks, pallets ect and make the timber the thickness I need. With pallets I edge glue several pieces together and after they are dry thickness them to what I need for a project.
My brother has done the same with a GMC cheapie and its paid off itself.
I would suggest to give it a serious thought. An outlay of less than the scrollsaw and no more having to chase thin timber ar run out on the weekend when the joiners are closed
