Around here it's balsa, but why you'd want to use it ...
knowing what are you trying to do, might help with a better reply. It may be that you really want a closer grained wood, like that used by carvers.regards from Alberta, Canada

I've added a picture. Size recommended is 38x38mm. Pattern designer thinks balsa would splinter, but I have not tried it.

Has the designer indicated what wood the originals are cut from?
I'm still thinking a close grained wood suitable for carving will be the go. Huon Pine is often mentioned in that context.regards from Alberta, Canada

Basswood is suggested. Not available here in Australia.

OK Basswood is well recognised as a wood favoured by carvers.
Here is a list of Australian and imported woods suitable for carving prepared by the Woodcraft Guild http://www.woodcraftguild.org.au/wp-...rvingWoods.pdf
The first place I'd try for any particular species is Trend Timbers Trend Timbers - Your One Stop Woodworking Supply Shop
There are other specialist suppliers, including in Brisbane -- I just haven't dealt with themregards from Alberta, Canada
