Default What type of wood do you scrollers use?

Over the years I've been using luan (awful!), any type of ply, pine and MDF for scrolling, but can anyone give me some other suggestions please? Mainly these items were painted.

I am now interested in doing some finer work with a nice quality wood of about 1/8" thickness, not to paint, but am unsure of what to buy.

    Thanks for any tips

Not sure what you have in the way of wood shops.
I buy rosewood and mahogany offcuts from the guitar making biz. It arrives in china barrels, there's so much of it. I confess that I have stirred paint with rosewood= cheap.
Big sheets? You might have far more jelutong that I will ever see. The same place sells veneer sheets, about 25 x 50cm x 6mm. I've never looked seriously at those for wood carvings. Some day, maybe for little inlays. But for book-matched veneer, radial veneer. . . . looks very nice.

Good Afternoon, Judy. I am very much an amateur scroll-sawyer but I use Jarrah when wanting something different.

I have searched for and used many different types of wood including radiata pine that I resaw to about 6mm. It cuts well and very economical. I also use off cuts from a flooring supplier. No cost. Some of this is very hard but I have found jarra and tassie oak quite good. It comes at about 13mm thick and depending on the job it will need to be reduced to 6mm or so.

Judy, I do a lot of portrait style work and I always use Baltic Birch (also known as Finnish Birch) plywood, It's pretty expensive but gives a great finish. Not available from that BIG hardware shop but you can usually get it from ply/veneer shops

Can you tell me please which ply/veneer shop you use in Brisbane. I'm after a ply with a bit more character for my western portraits. Bunnings sell a very bland grain which i'm getting tired of.
    Thanks in advance, Kev.

    Kev,
Don't know what side of Bris. you live, I'm on the north side. I usually get ply from "Janden Wood Products" at 28 Kremzow Rd, Strathpine ph: 3889 6300. I've always found Dennis Low (the manager) extremely helpful. They carry all sorts of ply. I've found Hoop Pine pretty good, and reasonably priced. They will even cut it for you at no cost so you can fit it in your car.
But for that "special " job, contact "Revolution Wood Panels"at 89 South Pine Rd, Brendale p: 3205 9182 and get some "Finnish Birch"ply. The Yanks call it Baltic Birch. It is pretty expensive so you wouldn't use it for practice work! I use it for all my competition projects They usually have to order it in for you.
For any practice jobs or "not special"jobs, I've found the ply from Masters to be much, much better than the other Big Shop!

Picked up some nice Luan pine ply from Masters yesterday. Interesting grain patterns. Springfield Lakes is an interesting place to try and find your way around though.
Thanks for the leads again guys, off to do some scrollin' now
