Whats a reasonably good scrollsaw for under $300?

Makita, nice little unit, can't recall the price but change out 300 I think.
Delta are good but I think the Makita has a few more options.
Don't ever ever ever ever consider a Proxxon, they are bloody awful and vibrate like buggery, they look good but are a real pain in the .
Both of the above have quick blade change and variable speed, both I think are essential, tilt table and blower.
You could really lash out and buy a DeWalt for about $1K which are really good value, love mine.

I have a Makita abd am fairly happy with it
there are some bits that P... me off but thats life
for $283 I rekon it was a good buy and dont forget nothing is good without good blades...........
I us flying dutchman blades but they work for me

Where can a Makita be bought in Australia?

I was thinking of maybe getting the Delta VS 16" Scroll Saw from Carbatec in Brisbane...

Seems to be a general good consensus on this machine in various newgroups around the net.

I went out today and picked up a Delta 16" Variable Speed Scroll Saw from Carbatec based on newsgroup feedback and positive responses....

The sales guy at Carbatec kindly threw in $30 of Olson scroll saw blades as well (I thinkt hey are goodqaulity blades?) so I'm happy with that.

Let's hope she goes ok... I think she will!
with a bit of practice of course!

Dean, I've been looking for a Delta scrollsaw for a while. Could you maybe let us know what it cost, what you think of it and a number for Carbatec?

Jim,

$299 at Carbatec for the Delta 16" VS Scroll Saw.

Havent had much chance to play with it yet...but so far, so good.

Only bad point as I see it is the air blower...pretty innefective at slow speeds and trickier to adjust, however, I am planning on making myself up an adjustable hose bound to some flexible tie wire so I can bend it and shape it to my needs. Also the Delta doesnt have a light...but hey, you can't have everything unoess you're willing to pay the big bucks for the expensive models.

Overall....happy so far

Timbecon have it for the same price, plus postage of course if you cant pick it up yourself.

I joined a local scrollers group the other weekend and the guy running it has the Delta scrollsaw you have and it handled quite to my liking, for the money. The quick change blade and variable speed are quite good over the single speed, pin blade one I currently have. I still havent upgraded mine yet but plan to soon hopefully

and this looks like the one for me. Just ordered the dual blade system from Timbecon for my GMC scrollsaw to see if that works with non-pinned blades, should keep me happy till i get the new one.

Also, correct me if im wrong here, but isnt the purpose of the 'air blower' to cool down the blade rather than blow away dust? Only learnt this on the weekend

Ive always read its to remove the dust so it doesn't inhibit you following your lines....

It would probably cool down the blade too, but I can't imagine it would have that great an effect in that role??

I could be wrong though...but Ive just never heard that one before

Got the Sherwood ACCS-16 adapter from Timbecon now, its made for Sherwood scrollsaws but is apparently meant to fit others aswell, will have to see how I go at fitting it to mine......

Try an aquarium pump for a blower, nice and quiet, as for lights, not many saws have them and I think you would find them in the wrong place anyway.
I use mine near a window and prefer natural light but failing that a reading light set up nearby works for me.
