    Question WMS Magno Scroll saw

G'Day scrollers, Can anyone tell me about this 16" saw. It comes with a footpedal on/off and looks in good nick but can't find any info on the net. Will buy if given good advice from other users.

Hi Wooden-top, WMS is woodworking machinery specialists : Wood Working Machinery

Generally WMS stuff and the owner Stan is pretty well regarded, if no one here is familiar with the unit, you might be able to get some feedback from Stan.

    good luck

I have the WMS 18" variable speed saw, which is a Hegner look-a-like, which is also the Trupro that Carrolls Woodcraft Supplies sells. Not sure if this is the same as the Magno one.

    Default Mango Saw

    Check for
Made to use pinless Blades easily
Has "Quick Release" tension for time and frustration saving
    Has variable speed
In my opinion most saws with the above are suitable for fretwork
    Good scrolling

Buy the best you can afford. Start at the top by looking at Hegner and then head down .
Make sure you look for made for Pinless Blades not a saw made for pinned blades with an adapter for pinless.
Adaptors are ok for a while but if you get into fine fretwork you will become frustrated with the time taken to move penatrations. I know some will disagree
Good luck. you will enjoy scrolling.

Just because you are a beginner doesnt mean you cant get a good saw to begin with, this will make your introduction to scrolling better, rather than starting with a cheap saw that will just make you frustrated. But also you may not want to spend $2500 on a saw and find you are not that interested in scrolling as you thought.

Anyway as Ted said, it all depends on your budget.

By all means look at the Hegner saws if your budget can stretch that far, unfortunately in Australia there arent many saws that fall between the Hegner and GMC/Ryobi type saws.

All that said, here are a few places you might want to check out.
CWS Store - Scrollsaws and Blades etc | Carroll's Woodcraft Supplies

New HAFCO WOODMASTER ScrollSaw B-18V 18 inch for sale: $220 AUD - Hare & Forbes MachineryHouse -Single Phase Scroll Saw

    Scroll Saws : CARBA-TEC

Maybe even lucky to find a second hand Hegner or Dewalt etc on here one day craigslist: melbourne classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events

I had the chance to use one of those HAFCO ones and found it ok for 3/4" puzzles and simple things, but even tho it says it takes both pin and pinless.... the one I had was a pain to use for pinless.

Did see a lot of people enjoying the Hegner look alike ( but blue and white) from Carba-Tec.... as long as they added the real Hegner clamps/block/knobs.

I could be a little late with my reply to be of much help but i will go ahead anyway and hope it can be of some use. I bought a Ryobi about 2yrs ago having never scrolled before and i found it okay for anything that didnt have more than 5 entry holes. The adapters to hold the pinless blades were painfull to say the least. I used the saw for about 2 months but as i was moving into more detailed fretwork i found i had to start looking at different saws. I eventually decided to give the x-calibre 21 ago and havent looked back (i ordered it from carrolls and got it posted up to Queensland at a very reasonable price). Only my opinion but if i was to do it all over again i would have saved the $200 the Ryobi cost me and bought a magnifying light.
Hope u find the right saw for you.
