Eye Irritant from Sanding CA glue
Recently I used Super glue to fix a piece of brass tubing into the handle of a knife to attach a lanyard. When I came to rough-shape the handle on the disc sander I sanded the edge of the tubing and a small amount of Super glue that gave off fumes that irritated my eyes. I recall another time I used a dremel grinding wheel to smooth rock inlay glued with Super glue when the same thing happened. Only connected the two today so I checked the MSDS and as expected found that the glue was a severe eye irritant in its liquid form but no mention of the effects of using friction to create fumes.
Has anyone else come across this?

Yes I have experienced this.
According to the American Conference of Industrial Hygienists, "Decomposition: degradation products include formaldehyde; thermal decomposition products may include highly toxic fumes of hydrogen cyanide and toxic oxides of carbon and nitrogen"
Another good reason to use a dust extractor .

Polymerized (dried) CA glues typically don't release any appreciable fumes after they've set as nearly all of the monomeric molecules that make up the glue in the liquid form become solids. While in the liquid form they can and do vaporize. Grinding or sanding the set glue may release very small amounts of monomer and if you've become sensitized you can have a reaction.

If you use these products frequently you may have become sensitized enough such that you are having a reaction to the set glue.Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.
