    Default Getting the stuff off.

    Hi all,
Just joined and here I go.
I've pulled off a stick on draught excluder from around our front door, it must have been there for donkeys years. I'm now left with a sticky residue which is giving me plenty of trouble.
So far, I've used a scraper, metho, white spirit, dry cleaning fluid (probably the same as white spirit) and varnish thinners. I've scraped and rubbed and I can still feel it sticking when I touch it. I'll be painting with gloss acrylic and don't want it to be peeling off.
    Any ideas much appreciated.

    Edited for daft spoolig mistook.

You could try some fine saw dust or similar, rub it on the adhesive then give it a hard wipe with a dry cloth. Bits of adhesive will be rubbed off the door and get coated with the saw dust, creating little particles of coated adhesive. Worth a try, and it won't cost you anything!

Acetone would be my go-to of choice, but if you're a bit less adventurous I'd suggest trying turps or a good citrus solvent, such as Sceneys.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Thanks all. I forgot to mention that I've tried turps, and my first choice was eucalyptus oil, neither did much at all. I've used varnish thinners as well (acetone) which didn't help. I'll try some sanding tomorrow and see what happens, but being right in the door jamb it's difficult to get enough purchase to work properly; other oldies that are getting arthritis will understand.

You don't say whether the surface underneath the residual glue is porous or not.

If it is NOT porous, then get a paper towel. Spray some WD-40 on it (about 2-3 seconds of spraying through the red straw they come with as an indication of "some"), and follow up with 4-5 pumps of Windex.

Use that to wipe off your residue - go slowly to allow the WD-40 to "break up" the stickies.

Follow up with pure Windex a couple of times to remove the WD-40 residue.

I'm fairly certain that varnish thinner is NOT acetone. Acetone is just that acetone. A lacquer thinner is typically a mix of naphtha and a benzine group organic hydrocarbon like xylene

I use 3M brand “700 adhesive remover” it’s about $40 a can, but it works and you can paint on the surface after use without any residue to clean up.

    Hi all, back again.
I got so carried away that I forgot to come back and thank you all for your replies, so, thanks. ) In the end I persevered with elbow grease, a scraper, white spirits, rag and a fair amount of bad language. I eventually got it right and it's now painted and will have no more stick on weather strips... ever.

get the wife to put her hands on the panel, believe me you will have the sticky removed, just be prepared to sleep outside for a week or two, once the bruises go down
