    Default longevity of hide glue

    Watson.
I did use that 70 year old glue and boy, did it go hard.

It was the first time I had ever used pearl glue so it is a learning curve for me. I glued the chair together in three stages. Front, back then the side rails.

I tried removing the exess squeeze out with a stiff brush and warm water but that raised the grain and as I had allready sanded to 400 grit I decided to do what usually do with other glues. That is cut with a sharp blade.

WRONG. Boy is that stuff hard. I had to use a hammer and chisel. Nearly ruined the job.

So it appears there is no shelf life to hide glue if kept in sealed pickle jars.

    That's great Rats,
I use the hot water (80ºC) brush and rag to remove squeeze out.......so the stuff you have must be "super" glue. Amazing stuff, but when you think that what we call antique furnitue was made with that stuff......and now when I think about it, why did I question the unmixed glue because of age???

yeah mate, its working.... and I've passed the story/concept on to the locals and they love it!
A smart concept with a bit of rudeness mixed in! Just right.
    Cheers,
