Thread: Best glue for spotted gum

Titebond 1 - nothing fancier required. I've just made a unit made from Spotted Gum - all panels were made from 7 x 22mm width spotted gum lengths all edge jointed and the doors frames butt jointed - no problems, no joint failure ... the only thing I found with Spotted Gum was how prone to tear out it was when using the router or thicknesser.

I've only got tb2 and tb3, witch would be your pick of the 2?

Depends on how strong you need the joint to be, and whether or not it may be exposed to moisture. Rub the joint faces with Acetone before gluing if you think the Spotty might be a bit greasy.

This is a diagram of the hatch stringer similar to what I need to make.
The 135 timber isn't wide enough to cut the complete curve out of.
What I propose to do is cut the lenth of timber in half on a suitable angle and buiscut/but join it back together.
It does have seals around the hatch that should keep all moisture out but it will be subjected to some stress upon open g and closing.
The two main reasons to use spotted gum is I have some well seasoned (I've had it aproximatly 3.5 years and believe it was stored for several years prior to that) and I've already used some in the galley.

I can't aford for this joint to fail due to the amount of work it would require to correct.
I'd very much apreciate any advice regarding alternatives to this joint if it isn't room ended.

I'm presuming, being a caravan and the different environments it will be in that there will be exposure to moisture, therefore, I would use Titebond III.

edge to edge, even with a biscuit, will create a possible weak point

have you considered a laminated approach?

Perhaps band saw two 35mm pieces to create a centre slot down the board say 12 mm wide and 300mm long

Cut another to make a 12mm x 600 mm and use it as a long tongue to join the other pieces

the area of bond will be huge compared to a biscuit


depending on on you design ang board width you may be able to take this approach (shorter than 600 slots perhaps) to create a curved outcome which will result in one cut piece from a large laminated board
