Default Hide glue video

If you need to see it to believe it, here's a recent video showing some of the virtues and features of horse sauce:

Yes it's excellent stuff, I'm a recent convert for almost every job now. Not sure I like how he presents the end grain glueing, I made several butt joints glued with it and I can't break them either.
I don't know how the myth got started that hide glue is inferior to modern glues, to me it is superior in almost all ways.

Cheers
Michael

That's amazing. Thanks for posting that Jeremy.
I've heard many of you guys extoll the vitues of hide glue here and often wondered what the attraction was.
That video was an eye opener for me.
Cheers
Jim

Woman I know went to luthier school in the UK. She runs a shop building, repairing and selling stringed instruments from violins to double basses. Hide glue for her work is as easy as playing with Leggo blocks.

It seems that the trade off for this being so quick setting is the hassle of having to mix the glue and apply it with a toothbrush.
I would be keen to give it a go, but I am a Yellow Glue kind of guy.

The video was ill prepared and featured an obvious newcomer to animal glue... he claims hide glue "... is made from ground hides and bones and whatever of animals". It's not: Hide glue is made from animal hides and bone glue is made from animal bones. If you buy hide glue from a reputable source, it will contain pearls (not "crystals') of gelatine refined from animal hides. If you buy bone glue, it will have been rendered down from animal bones. I suspect half the unlabeled stuff you buy these days contains all sorts. To the average woodworker, there's not a great difference in performance between the two. It's more accurately termed 'animal glue'.

Animal glue is also much more dynamic than alluded to in the video: It can be as quick- or slow-setting as you desire, depending on how it's prepared. And as for all that faffing about measuring glue/water and jars with lids on... pah! Just throw some glue in the glue pot, cover with water and switch the thing on! In ten to fifteen minutes (not "a couple of hours"), you'll have useable glue.

Is it true you can use an old slow cooker for a glue pot?

You may be able to use a slow cooker if it could hold a temperature of 65°C.

The best glue pot I have ever owned is a wax pot I bought off eBay. They have an inner pot (with a brush wiping rod) which can be removed for occasional washing. They are normally available on eBay for $45 'Buy it now".
