Thread: Opinions on the best Glue ( Adhesive ) for bonding together broken Gun stock

PVA or urethane, personally I would replace the stock.

Not sure about gun stocks, but I have just been using ThreeBond 5 minute epoxy with very good results.

Thanks for your replies guys , but nowadays there are some very good adhesives available.
I have personally used Cascomite and Araldite with success.
I wondered if anyone has experience of the quality of GorillaGlue ? Or in fact any opinion is always appreciated.

typically a gun stock will have been given an oil treatment.
I would think that this oil would need to be removed to achieve a successful repair.

a cracked or broken stock would suggest to me some some very serious damage suggesting that a new stock was required and that the barreled action required checking for damage. The two broken gun stocks I've seen were both unrepairable.

Making stocks is a large part of my business. Repair and modification also plays a part.
When a stock requires glue repair it depends on a lot of differing factors to determine the best glue for the job. For instance; the type of timber, the finish used, where the fracture is located, cross grain or with the grain and these are just a few. Generally speaking, epoxy will give the strongest result.
The most common break in shot guns is through the wrist or pistol grip. Usually caused by over decorative timber being used with inappropriate grain through the grip area. Another major factor can be solvent penetration in the timber weakening the fibres. In this instance, forget repair and fit a new stock.
A repaired stock is always just that...a repaired stock. The value of the piece is drastically compromised and begs the question why the time spent mending wasn't put towards a replacement. Second hand stocks are available these days, so to semi finished new. It's pretty hard to justify the time spent bogging up an old one.
