    Default Polyurethane glues

Selleys has withdrawn it's fast setting PU glue, Mega Bond. Bugger! It was handy for small jobs that needed a quick cure time.

Worse still, by favourite veneering glue, Titebond Polyurethane is becoming next to impossible to find. Even CarbaTec has ceased holding it. Double Bugger!

Is anyone aware of another PU glue with Titebond's properties ... 20 minutes open time ... 45-60 minutes clamp time? All the other glues I have found ask for 3-4 hrs of clamp time.

    Found these three Purbond products.

Purbond Standard ... Open Time 45-60 minutes Clamp Time 3hrs plus. (Too long in the clamps for me.)
Purbond F20 ... Open time 5 minutes Clamp time 20 minutes. (This one looks handy for small jobs.)
Purbond Fx ... Open time 1 minute Clamp time 5 minutesCure. (Almost like superglue.)

Then there is the TAC 501 product that Tony (tomartomau) alerted me to. Open Time @ 20°C: up to 40 minutes. Press Time @ 20°C: ~ 60 minutes. Faster cure can be achieved by lightly dampening the unglued surface before making the join.

Thanks Tony. The TAC 501 looks to be the business for me. Plenty of open time and only an hour in the press when veneering.

    Oops ...

Tried to ring TAC adhesives to find a reseller in Qld. Strangely, I got a "Not connected" message.

Did another search and discovered that the TAC factory burned down earlier this year.

Bugger. Their PU glue looked like a great candidate.

    EDIT:

Just spoke to Titebond. They have discontinued their wonderful PU glue.

Selleys discontinued their quick cure Mega Bond product.

Is the universe plotting against woodworkers?

    Back to square one.

Hi John, Elraco Distributers in Adelaide might have some stock but as with PU glued shelf life is a concern and their stock may be quite old. I’ll keep looking though

Kleiberit 501 Adhesive PUR | Rustic World Timbers

This is the same KLEIBERIT 501.0 PU glue ... $18 a bottle ... free shipping.

EDIT: I ordered a bottle from Rustic World Timbers. Once it arrives it will get a test. However, based on the advertised open and clamp times, it looks like a winner. Time will reveal all.

EDIT AGAIN: Got a message from Rustic World Timbers. They wanted $18 for the glue and $32.93 for shipping ... despite the shipping column of my order saying FREE SHIPPING. I cancelled the order.

EDIT YET AGAIN: Found it at Dorset Australia. $27.57 ... until we add taxes and shipping when the price rises to $62.23. PASS! Found a couple of places that sell only in boxes of 12.

As the poem says, I am past caring. I have spent the best part of a day trying to buy one bottle of glue. I am tired of dealing with robber barons and fibbers. I intend to retire to the verandah with a Bombay Sapphire and ice. This quest can continue on another day.

Bought the KLEIBERIT 501.0 PU glue from e-bay. $22 plus $16.50 or $38.50 for a 500 ml bottle.

Looks like you can order up to 4 from ebay seller with postage staying at $16.50. Makes it more reasonable if it is any good.

Yes. The problem is that PU glues have a limited shelf life. Shelf life unopened is said to be 12 months. Once they are opened, they'll last only a month or two. That's a big part of the reason that Selleys discontinued their Mega Bond product. I'm told this is also a major reason for the discontinuation of the Titebond PU glue as well. I've had one of each go hard on me, during quiet times in the workshop.

    Thanks, Robert.

I was a bit confused by the tech data sheet, with different numbers for initial set time, clamp time and etc. I'm not 100% sure what they mean ... but I'll work it out. I note they sell slow and fast glues. I also note they sell Resorcinol Resin, which I haven't seen in ages.

    Hi John .

    The set time numbers

    Untitledglue.png

I just get work clamped up within the 3 minutes.
15 minutes later and it has foamed out and is going slightly stiff.
I can then go in for lunch and after an hour take it out of clamps with no problems .
Even sooner like 20 to 30 minutes if its something with no spring back pressure at all.

    Rob.
