8mm bits and the Triton Router

I have just today received a gift of a set of 50 router bits from my daughter who is overseas. The only problem is that they have 8mm shanks and I have a Triton router with 12.7mm and 6.3mm capabilities!

I have talked to Triton and they could provide me with a 12mm router chuck designed for the Japanese market, with a 8mm collet adaptor, but this would prevent me from using my existing 12.7mm bits. It is a messy job changing chucks, so I wouldn't want to be doing it on a regular basis.

I noticed on the net that you can purchase a 12.7mm to 8mm sleeve. Has anyone used one safely, and without any problems?

I guess I could go and buy a 8mm router, but that would be the last resort.

Has any one addressed this problem?

Hi bob,

I have the triton router, and use 8mm router bits with it on a dovetail jig . I got my reducer from MIK, I always make sure the open slot in the sleeve lines up with the slot in the collet and it hasnt slipped yet.

I say go for it.

Good-day Bob,
I have not had any problems using reduction sleeves in the past and still use them to hold 1/4 in router bits in the Makita mounted in the router table.

Fellows, thanks for the info.

Had a look at the MIK web site, but couldn't see individual reducers in their online catalouge, so emailed them to see if they can help. Hope to hear from them soon.

Hi Bob, Mik should be able to help you as they should carry them from the Leigh Jig range of accessories.The 8mm is popular for the added rigidity given to the bits which is why they're popular in Europe and USA continent but not commonly known here these days.

Speak to Michael the main man at MIK always helpful.

I use a 1/2 inch to 8mm reducer regularly as part of my router jig with no problems.

They are fast and efficent to deal with
