    the rifle fore stocks I'm most familiar with either have a constant width channel, or a stepped channel, that is clear of the barrel. The barrel is either pillar bedded or bedded onto a steel bar. So I'm curious why you would want a variable width groove.

    Not too snug. The barrel must not touch the wood when it is fired.

    Make a frame which is tapered in thickness and has a slot tapered in width.
