Ball end router bit
Hi. Was wondering if anyone has used a ball end router bit and if so, did they have any dramas? I am not looking to cut a pipe recess into a piece of wood, but am hoping to cut a round bottomed groove using a few passes. Doesn't seem to be much info on people using these. Thanks.

Cool. thanks. Was a toss up between a round nose or a ball end. The ball end was $3 so thought would give it a fly. Need to cut a 15mm deep groove in a 300mm long piece of timber, 20 wide one end and 23 the other. To suit a rifle barrel. Would you recommend running a straight cut of some kind first as pilot for the ball or just use the ball from the start?

Ah, then I haven't used them, but you do need to run a straight bit first as a pilot

The only info I can find on these is, "Do the cut in one pass." , but the are refering to cutting a "bore hole" along a length of timber, not a gradual trench. Thankyou for your input. Always best to ask than to get fingers sewn back on.lol

They're not designed to trench, a round nose is.

Learning as I go!! I just figured if a round nose cuts 180 degree circle and a ball cuts 360 degrees, then it might be doable! I better do lots of tests first, when the bit arrives!

Hi,
I'll have to be careful!! Every round nose bit I've ever seen was called a ball nose!!
Cheers

I think they cover themselves by saying ball end, rather than nose. They seem most popular with the 2d printer guys for carving faces etc. but they use 2 and 3mm bits. I have a 20mm bit coming!
