    Default Bench top router table

I finally got around to replacing my first effort at building a bench top router table. The first one had a couple of flaws that I could no longer live with. It was also very heavy and a strain to set up and remove. I need a bench top model due to the limited space in my workshop. I don't have a shed.

I got the inspiration for this design from a book and modified the top to take a full size sheet of 9mm plexi-glass. The plexi-glass is the impact resistant stuff used in prison windows. I used a full size piece to avoid uneven joints between the insert plate and the rest of the table. It only cost $20 from a fellow who sells off-cuts at the Rocklea Markets on Sundays in Brisbane. The stuff is also great for Jigs. The ply was purchased from the offcuts section of Ausply in Tennison for $22 so the overall cost was lest than $50 for materials.

    Default great table

Lookin' good. I particularly like the idea of the prison quality plexi-glass. I did not know there was such stuff. How have you fixed it to the table top? Let us know how is goes re scratches and any resistance to sliding timber or other materials across it etc.

I am about to build a bench top router table myself, not the same style as yours though. I will post some photos when I am finished (about 3 weeks or so). I might give the plexi-glass a try if I can track some down.

    Thanks for the post.

    Thanks for the feedback.

The Plexglass is fixed down only by the weight of the router. As you can see from the photos there is a frame to keep it in place. I've used the same stuff for another jig and it seems pretty resilient.

The gent from the markets is currently on holiday and should be back at the end of this month.
