    Lightbulb Butterfly Key Joints

    Hi all,

I am creating a slab dining room table... all has gone well so far, but now I need to address some end-splits in the timber that I'm using for the top.

From the reading I've done on this site and others, I understand that the best way of securing the splits is to use butterfly key joints.

Does anyone have any guidance on how this can be done using the triton router? I need the joints to be snug.

Is this a template job? If so, any thoughts on the best templates to use (Triton or other)? Where can I get the templates from?

Yep - I need help. Any guidance that you can provide will be greatfully appreciated.

    Cheers,
    TKG

Hi, I cut mine by hand with a chisel and mallet, make the butterfly to fit.
If it goes against the grain, it's being rubbed the wrong way!

Thanks for the tip. Do you have a quick and easy way of copying the shape of the mortice and then cutting out the key? Did you use a bandsaw?

There is a way to do this with a router and a funky template. I have one of these setups on order for this very reason. When I try it out I'll let you know the results along with pictures of my success or failure.

    Ciao,

I make one butterfly and use it as a template to mark the mortices, after I've cut the mortices I check the fit and then if it's satisfactory I use it as a template for the rest. Cut them on a bandsaw and then trim for a ? perfect fit. Take your and the result will be worth it. I don't think there is any short cuts.
