Buying a new Router?
Hi Everyone, I'm in need of a new Router, to use with the Leigh Mortice & Tenon Jig, & the Leigh Dovetail jig.
I already have a Makita in my table, & I use a Hitachi M12V2 freehand, but I'm finding the Hitachi heavy with
continuous liftiing up & down off the jigs.
I would love the Festool 1400 EBQ, but I don't think I can justify the price. So now I'm looking at the Triton 1400
watt MOF001 which seems nice & light & still has a 1/2 in collet. I have read the reviews, but I've also read, that
there are some problems regarding reliability, has anyone experienced anything bad? or is there anything else on
the market? Thanks

Only about 300g difference between yours and the Triton. I've had my MOF001 for over 2 years and, touch wood, no major problems so far. Just the annoying problem of winding down in the table if you forget to lock the plunger lever. I believe there has been some problems with the armature on earlier models (supposed to have been redesigned on later models) and the speed control issue which some members have experienced but not sure how old their units are.

For dovetail jigs I find a "D" handled router like the Makita 3601B very hard to beat as it has plenty of power and is the best handling; plus I'm pretty sure the Porter cable type bushes screw straight into the baseplate. perhaps try one of those and stick with the Hitachi for the M&T jig as most of those need a plunge router.

Hi Chief, Thanks for that
Not sure if we have that model Makita over here [Thailand] though not seen one before.
It's certainly light though, what's the power like?
I've only had one fixed base router before, & that was a Craftsman, many years ago, my first router,
& it was a pig to lock, to stop it adjusting it's self. Since then I've always stuck to plunge Routers.
Is that one easy to adjust & lock, it looks it.
There is no variable speed on it either, or soft start, is that an issue?

No soft start; she tends to kick a little. No spindle lock either; you tighten the collet with two spanners. And the variable speed is conspicuously absent!
This unit has been around for decades; it's one of those older tools which just works so well the OEM won't change anything. Despite the flaws it really excels for edge and jig work because of its superb handle layout.
Power isn't a problem for this unit; it may say only 1050W but they feel like real RMS watts, not bullpoop peak watts.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.
