The cheap bit price guide...
Hi all,
Relating to a post I had awhile ago about spiral bits and the advice that Rocker gave me at the time about Lee Valley having relatively good prices...
I can finally afford to buy a few router bits and thought I'd compare prices between some popular online vendors. I was after some specific profiles and sizes but my research has shown a definite trend in pricing which I hope you'll all find useful regardless of the bit you might be after.
Attached is a spreadsheet which I've saved in an earlier version of Excel (incase you're not all using Office 2000+) which details prices from 7 vendors, both local and overseas. I've listed the vendor, website, router bit brand, prices (based on .77c for US based sites) web address and relevant notes.
To summarise
In Australia, the cheapest bundle was from MCJing tools. Don't know the quality of their product though, but they always seem popular at the Timber shows. The other Australian sites were very expensive, but these prices are based on CMT and carbitool bits. I'd guess that Craftmaster bits would be around the same price.
In the US, MCLS most likely comes in much cheaper than McJing (inc postage, although I'm waiting for shipping costs) They've got some really good specials, and their general prices are excellent. Lee Valley and Jesada are on par and their prices are much cheaper than the other Australian sites. Keep in mind though that the Australian sites are selling quality name brands. On the down side, you've got a longer wait from overseas and the possibility of having to pay duty.
Happy shopping!
Think I'll go get a life now...
Paul.I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory...

Thanks for your effort Paul. Based on your spreadsheet, I ordered some bits from MCLS, and asked them to air post rather than courier. I wasn't aware of this company before your post.

Thanks Paul,
On the subject, has anyone had any experience buying Infinity Router Bits and the service provided by Infinity? According to a review by www.onlinetoolreviews.com they're excellent quality. The price for a 1/2" spiral bit is US$49.90.

Just an update on my order from MLCS. The bits arrived today, approximately 2 weeks after ordering them. I had asked for them to be air mailed rather than couriered, which they did. Postage was US$45 over a total order of around US$250, so it wasn't too bad. The items seemed to be of a very good quality. I had ordered the "Pins and Tails Through Dovetail Jig" and hope to try this out in the near future. Overall I am very happy. Thanks again for the heads up on that one Paul.
