That is their consumer grade range.

This is probably a bit small:

This is better but no accessories:

If you are determined to buy new so be it, but if it were me I'd try for an old makita 1500 - 2000W or hitachi at the right price. As I say you can move it on later for little or no loss and it will get you going.

I'm ok with second-hand, it's just hard to know what I'm looking for and what's a good deal on the various models as it's hard to know what they're actually worth. There's a few good options of eBay. Was just thinking that a consumer grade device like the Maktec might be all I need.

I'll keep your router in mind Elan.

If you definitely don't want variable speed, I would suggest taking Elan up on his offer. It's a good router.

It's a little annoying that there isn't much available new with variable speed between the cheap, mediocre Ryobi and the big, expensive makita or hitachi models. I have an old (almost dead) example of the latter, a Hitachi M12V, and that's not ideal either, being a bit heavy and unwieldy for hand holding.

My own search for a replacement with the fewest compromises led me to a rather left-field choice detailed in another thread.

You could do as I did: look up eBay.UK for an older Elu 177e. This is the forerunner of the DeWalt 625. This Elu is possibly the best router ever made. I have two of the 177e models, one purchased 30 years ago, and a second for the router table 18 months ago. It cost about $150 including all shipping.

Variable speed, 2 1/4 hp, 1/2 " spindle. Solid and dependable.

There is no better at the price for a large router.

Next, for a mid size is the Elu OF97e ... forerunner of the DeWalt 621. This is 1/4" and variable speed. Best dust control on the planet

    Regards from Perth

I ended up getting a Hitachi TR-12 with a 4 good quality bits (Carb-i-tool) thrown in for $160 delivered on eBay. It's in very good condition, just with saw dust and a bit of service rust on some parts due to storage. Decided to take it apart and give it a good clean and put it back together. Have yet to cut any chips with it yet though.
