Thread: Height adjustment wheel on triton router

Eric, i haven't had this problem but hardly ever take my Triton out of the table anyway. You would be wise to check out the new Triton router, due out very soon. Ideal hand held and lots of tricky bits, but still retaining the features of the larger version. It's fab !

I'd suggest possibly moving this post over to the Triton forum, you'll get a good response there.

I presume that whilst table mounted you removed the spring as suggested by Triton. So when using it hand held do you replace the spring? If not this may have something to do with it.

Yes I removed the spring when mounted under the table and put it back when using it free hands
When I switch the router on it is pretty to see that this thumbwheel is basically going down on the threaded rod due to the vibrations (well that's my guess)

I think you may need to adjust the lever position on the lever lock, which engages the height mechanism & stops all movement, up or down. You know - its the black plastic thingy that you lock everytime you use the thing

Also - use the plunge bar & turret arrangement to double lock the height.

The problem is actually on the turret
The thumbwheels on the turret do not hold their position
In free hand mode, and when the router is on, you can clear see these wheels rotating and therefore going down and changing the height
To give oyu an example of how annoying it is, the other day I was making a fly screen and I ahd to rout the grooves on the inside panels to fit the rubber thingy to block the mesh
So I set the router for a 4mm depth for the first pass
I routed the first groove which was ok then I moved to the second one and noticed that it was getting harder to pull the router (back routing)
I stopped, checked the height adjustment and it was close to 8-9mm
routing a groove took less than 30s
So I am thinking now that either I should change the turret or there is another solution I don't know

Bugger. You may have to look at getting a second set of nuts & using them as 'jam nuts' to lock the whole assembly. I'm not sure what thread they are either, probably some metric thingie - at least its not make in Korea, where thread standards are considered just an advisory.

I think Triton wants you to use the lever lock anyway - while you are actually routing. E.g. - rout, unlock, plunge, lock, rout, unlock, plunge etc etc. The problem there is that the stages you are not using are still free to change up or down, unless you can get some lock nuts.

Temporarily, something sticky like boiled linseed oil may increase the friction enough to hold the nuts in place.

I might missing something.
2 of you mention the use of the lever lock but if I am in free hand mode and lock it, how can I plunge it?

If I lock, rout, unlock, how can I plunge the router?
either I am missing something very important or my router does not have that feature

You have to use the lock lever after you plunge but before you move off down the job. 3 hands help, or having big hands that can reach it while hanging on with the other 4 fingers

It is supposed to be adjustable for angle, just loosen the screw in the middle of the lever & pull the lever out a bit, then rotate till its in a better position, push back in & tighten everthing up.

If you can't reach it without letting go of the router, then you'll have to investigate the lock nuts or something similar
