    Default my reasons

I have long had an interest in woodwork(and just want a hobby as i have the time because i dont work due to a back and neck injury),but never had anywhere to do it as the old 10x10 shed down the back was too small, and recently i got a new garage built so now have the room to move, i thought of boxes in particular because they would not take up much room and are not heavy and thought i wouldnt need to spend too much on tools, but as others have pointed out i should realy have a thicknesser, which is a problem because of the noise problem,(not a $$ problem)i have thought of just finding a cabinet maker who would thin small batches for me from time time to get around that noise problem.
So i am slowly building up the basic tools i would need, router, dovetail jig, mitre saw, tenon saw,,,i already have a drill press, some chisels, hand planes power saw ect, and intend to build my own router table, and other benches as needed over time.
In the meantime have been borrowing books from the library to get ideas on how i should equip the new workshop.

Sunday markets! Perfect! Heaps of opportunity to bargain hunt yourself for old plaens, chisels, saws, spokeshaves and the like.

On the machinery side, if you're sticking to small boxes, then Timbecon and Carbatec have benchtop jointers for a $2-300 dollars. That'd do you fine for a jointer I reckon.

And try to set up to resaw (on a bandsaw), rather than machine your stock thinner. You'll be wasting 1/2 of it!
    Cheers,

    Adam

    Default Setup a cheap shop

    Hi Redd,
Having aquired a triton MK# workbench 12 years ago it has been the work horse of my little shop at home.
you can pick up second hand ones in trading post all the time,no need to buy new, then add a second hand router, try the cash converters, ask them to let you plug it in (without bit) if it spins quiet then it could be a nice cheap start,
as for dovetail jig i also have a gifkins, and its a little wonder,(not as versatile as my Leigh, but great for making small jewlery boxes, ans the gifkins is precise,
    hope this helps
    kind regards A192K

I am new to woodwork, and have just got myself a decent size garage i can work in now.
I want to make jewellery boxes,i want to know what tools i would need to get me started.
Gifkin Dovetail jig-or will something cheaper do the same job?
Routers-what sort? ( i want to attach it to a table)-not too expensive
    Chisels-what sizes?
anything else to make the job easier?
    All advice appreciated
    Thanks
I have produced a great number of trinket boxes and the only tool I used was the router and maybe Bandsaw or jigsaw
