The 3612 is a constant non variable speed set at 22000rpm whilst the 3612C has electronic variable speed from 9000 to 23000rpm

I'm with Stevenp. I also have the 3612C and am very glad to have variable speed. Wouldn't be without it.
Note: The electronic brake does not work when it is mounted in a router table and being switched off via a remote switch. Not a big deal for me.

You definitely need variable speed if you are going to use larger router bits (eg raised panel bits). It also helps to prevent burning in timbers like blackwood if you can slow it down.

I think that the 3612 is only 1850 watts power as against 2300 for the 3612C

I've had the 3612 for about 8 years. Brilliant router and I am happy with it it but I wished I had spent the extra dollars on the C model just for the varible speed.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
I was looking at a US site instead of an Aussie site and the price difference was on $40...
Found an Aussie site and the price was $A500+....oh well , will have to wait a bit longer.
