Default Optimal distance from edge of router table to bit

Hi all. I am designing my first router table. It will sport the incra LS positioner. Not that it matters.
What is the optimal distance from the front edge of the router table to the bit?
If it is too great I'll be leaning over and maybe stressing my bad back. If its too small I won't have a good surface to hold the work piece flat.
I'm thinking of making it 350mm but that is just a stab in the dark really.

Will it be attached to a table saw?

Just make the table height such that you don't need to bend over to use it. Have a look at the height adjustable desks in OfficeWorks. I thought about getting one of their offerings as a height adjustable work bench but it would make a great router table.

I am going to have to mount it on lifters so that I can store it under my assembly table.

The best way to work it out would be to clamp a stick to your bench as a mock fence and see how it feels to run timber past it at different distances. 350mm does sound a bit far to me, though.

My router is set back about 350mm. Seems about right for me. Similar to all of the spindle moulders I have used, but I never once measured what the distance was, I only just measured my router table 20secs ago

I like your lateral thinking. Not sure if I could maintain perfect flatness that way though.

Thanks. It sounds like a lot until you stand at a table, mark it off and imagine needing to route a panel or something. However I have no experience to base this on.

So I went in and had a look. It is not suitable as it is, for a router table with the incra LS positioner. It has a steel duct and rod running along the middle length wise where the router needs to be mounted. You would need to move the frame to offset it. The height range of adjustment is ideal. It says it can support 60Kg of weight.

You could probably make the electric rising version work for $650 because the beam on that one is offset from the middle. That's beyond my budget, though I like the idea. Or you can buy one without the top cheaper on eBay. I might consider that as plan B if my gas lifter idea doesn't work out.

You would need to modify any of these to address the inherent rigidity issue with them but I have to do that with my gas lifters idea also.

Anyway that was kinda off topic to be honest.
