    Question Router with big bit

Hi All, New to the forum, I have a Craftsman fixed base router, 9.5 amp 1 3/4 peak HP. It has a no load speed of 25,000 rpm. It has collets for 1/4 and 1/2 inch. I am going to be making some cabinets so I bought a rail and stile set with a raised panel bit. The bits are 1/2 inch and the raised panel bit is 3 and 3/16 diameter. The book states it can handle a bit 3 1/2 inch. My question is "is it safe to use this bit on this router? I was planning on using it on a table set up, the other issue is the hole in my router table is not big enough, I was thinking of making another base with a bigger hole. Let me know what your thoughts are. I am a bit (no pun intended) new to all of this. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, what about the speed? Is that an issue since it is not a variable speed?

That's a big bit for someone who is "new to all of this"" to start with.
My first suggestion is get some guidance from a local familiar with routing.
That bit must only be used in a table, never handheld. Your router needs to be set at minimum speed. Is that a variable speed router? If not, forget it.

Thanks for the reply, I have took some woodworking classes but recently purchased my own router. It is NOT variable speed so should I scrap the idea of raised panel doors or can I get a smaller bit and if so can you recommend a good source? Would you recommend a 2 inch diameter bit?

You can use vertical raised panel bits at 24000 rpm.
You need to make a high fence to support the work.

Growing old is much better than the alternative!

Fixed base routers are not suitable for these bits.
Firstly they should only be used in a routertable, not handhelds and, secondly, a fixed base cannot be adjusted as is required for rail and stile routering.
It is not the speed at the spindle you have to worry about, it is the speed at the extreme of the bit.

Thanks that's a good idea. I think I found a solution, I did some research and found a "junior" 3 piece raised panel set, they are smaller and should work just fine for what I am doing. Here is a Youtube link to them: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-zWX3vVyTo&list=FLaJ_vJE4MN6TeAVZwG2s6mw&index=1&feature=plpp_video"]3 piece junior paised panel set - YouTube[/ame]
