Brisbane Gumtree usually has a few laughs. There's a GMC router up for $200 at the moment. That said a few Tritons have popped up recently at what seems like relatively reasonable price points considering they're nearly new. Although it is a bit concerning that there are so many nearly new Triton routers and tables up for sale. The only Makitas and Hitachis tend to be *really* well loved, perhaps a testament to their quality?

Haha I feel like GMC sellers are some of the most uninformed or optimistic people on earth based on their prices. Absolutely bonkers.

Well of course there are silly things on gumtree and ebay but if the buyer sticks to pretty mainstream items where values are well known there are bargains.

There was a router master at bowral last week for $100. I'd have loved it but the 2200 km round trip makes it a tad difficult...

Maybe some of you never sell on tools and have nothing in your workshops that never gets used, but certainly I have changed tack a few times over the years. I had a triton bench for a while but got fed up with the difficulty of getting it spot on. Then I spent big money on my table saw/router/incra and I've pushed an awful lot of timber through it since. Another 4 hours of that this morning. There are other tools covered, nay buried, in dust... it's nice to be able to change and not lose too much...

Anyway, as long as you're having fun

Default What new Router would you buy?

Oh I totally agree Damian, I’ve gotten outstanding deals on machines and old tools through Gumtree. Did some sums for insurance the other week and I’d estimate I’ve probably spent about 30% what I would have spent outfitting the shed had I bought new. Just need to be patient and wait for the deals to come up.

If you only consider the basic principle of getting from A to B to be the primary measure, then a Mazda can do everythig a Merc can do. So yes, they are equal. If you consider how they do it, then they are very different.

My guidance is to buy the best you can afford as you will never regret a quality tool purchase. If you have to wait a month or 2 to get something a little better, then wait.

I have 2 Triton routers. Sure, you can make it route but when it comes to the finer things like dust extraction, it is a dog. Would be lucky if it collected 10% of the dust. Festool on the otherhand claim 99%+.

I am now looking to upgrade to a Festool. I suspect I will replace all my tools one day with Festool and certainly will be buying Festool for anything new. My ongoing internal battle is replacing a tool that still works!!!

    Hope that helps.

I doubt anyone is saying that buying quality tools is a bad thing. However it's hard to justify spending $1700.00 for a Festool OF 2200 when you can buy for example a Hitachi M12VE for one third the price especially when the person is doing DIY projects. Of course if you use it every day it may be worth it.

My Triton collects chips and dust just fine. It’s about having the correct fittings for the task at hand.

A mercedes is a poor example. I'm a motor mechanic by trade and mech eng by profession and you could not pay me to drive a mercedes.

An acquaintance lost the fob for an S class a couple of years back. $10,000 for the replacement. I remember at tech the stories the other apprentices told of working in merc and bmw dealerships. Horrible cars. Unreliable, badly engineered and disgracefully overpriced.

    HypnoToad: Could not agree more.

Other mechanics questioned my buying a no name set of 3/8 sockets when I was fixing F100s for a living. Never broken one, not even the universal joint. I've still got dozens of tools I bought back in the 80's, some no name ones. I use them properly and they get the job done.

Festool might claim 99% extraction, but that'd only be in specific conditions. My OF2000 won't get close to that with edge profile bits, even with the additional chip catcher, and with a slot cutter you might as well not bother with a a vacuum at all 'cos it ain't doin' squat. My vac is a Festool CT33 with a 36mm hose.

The new OF2200 might do better, but I still doubt 99% collection in any scenario where the bit is exposed on one side.

    Hi Lappa,

That is fantastic to hear. Please share your setup.

My setup is nothing short of pointless!

Just to clarify I wasn't annoyed or anything above. I can see re reading it it might look that way.

Routing dados or mortises, the basic shield set-up with a 32mm vacuum hose to a 2200w VC works fine. When edge routing it was a major problem until I bought the chip chute that used to be in the early template kit. The new template kit doesn’t include it and I searched for some years with no success then it appeared back on the market in the UK. It connects to the black plastic base plate holes.
My router is in the table at the moment but here’s the chute attached to the black base plate

I have used a De Walt 621 trouble free for more than 8 years. If you decide to but one I would very strongly recommend making a 6 mm polycarb or acrylic baseplate 185 mm to greatly improve stability. Making the base plate is an absolute no brainer. If you would like assitance I would be willing to help you
