Thread: Yet another Router table build.

Looking at something like this to move the router and fence: AU-Antibacklash-Ball-Screw-SFU1204-12mm-L250mm-Ballnut-BF-BK10-End-Machining
There are some are very high precision units with a sealed bearing nut but about 3 times the price and not in the length I would require, so I'm thinking of getting one to see if it will do the job. You should only need a small stepper to drive the fence as it's running on 4 bearing blocks and should take nothing to move, I'm planning on having a fence lock in any case so holding torque won't be a problem, a lock will also overcome any concerns of the fence moving for any reason whilst working.
Does anyone know of something better?

Ever since I bought the fence upgrade to my Laguna SUV14" bandsaw (the Drift master) I've been wanting to use one of these to make a better one.
There are a few out there that use 19mm threads and they look mighty indeed. The price has positively crashed since I started looking (3 years ago!!...)

Looks ideal and 6.5mm to 10mm couplings are readily available. Do you know what the lead is, as it doesn’t appear to be stated on the site?

No idea of the screw lead, as noted it's not specified, but at least this will give me an idea of what is required and I can get something running for testing various mounting and drive ideas.

Wonderful table mode with a lot interesting technical material added. Looking forward to seeing the projects produced with it should be very interesting.

Hi Tom, yes I'm sure those interesting projects will look the same as if made with a $30 router, a few clamps and an old cabinet door with a hole in the centre.
I know some of us like to combine our various hobbies together, so apart of coming up with an R-table dust extraction design that produces zero dust and zero clean up, it's now the fun of adding automation and making something easier to use, so just another part of a slightly different but equally rewarding woodwork journey. In my case I get to combine three of my hobbies for this fun project.
I can see the technical stuff and build ideas getting spread across the thread, so I think if we can get this to work as planned then I may have to consolidate the final complete build into a separate thread.
Cheers.(1) Our small workshop layout __ (2) Bandsaw circle cutting jig __ (3) Spindle sander modifications __ (4) Dust Sensor

Success - I have the DRO sender running without it's display head. The "sender - slide" is connected to my Microprocessor with an off the shelf USB lead, no need to modify the DRO as it just plugs into the same socket on the sender as the existing supplied head readout.
I wrote some code, was about to give up, but found the problem in the code right at the last try. Dam clock pulse to data ready timing is more critical than I thought.
Now to code the conversion into MM and inches, but the data is 100% rock solid in tracking the sender movement. Also figured how they set ZERO on the slide.(1) Our small workshop layout __ (2) Bandsaw circle cutting jig __ (3) Spindle sander modifications __ (4) Dust Sensor

Thanks Chris, I forgot to add the "what it means" info for anyone not familiar with what were doing:
What it means is this, we can connect two DRO units to the same Microprocessor controller that controls the Steppers. The Router height DRO and Fence DRO can be now be displayed together on the Micro-controller and its 5" or 7" touch screen, the Micro-controller can now move the Fence or Spindle to the exact value required using the DATA from the precision DRO sender. The OEM supplied DRO displays are no longer used.(1) Our small workshop layout __ (2) Bandsaw circle cutting jig __ (3) Spindle sander modifications __ (4) Dust Sensor

Now that sounds like my kind of gadget but can we buy the DRO read head and strip without a display or is that the wrong question?

I've seen that asked a lot lately on the NET, the answer appears to be NO, for the cost of the units it's unlikely to make much difference on price going by the comments.

Great progress!!
What brand DRO units are you using?

The iGaging EASY-VIEW DRO from Timbecon in AU. I purchased a few when they released them on special, around $39 for the 300mm back then.
Now displaying on 7" LCD in mm (same as OEM head unit) and it's a 100% stable reading with no averaging needed. Now that I've got position data, I just need to knock up a test stepper drive and DRO and test code the auto control. Then the time consuming task of writing the complete program for router table use for the micro and display. Very pleased at the moment.(1) Our small workshop layout __ (2) Bandsaw circle cutting jig __ (3) Spindle sander modifications __ (4) Dust Sensor
