Default A New Router Table top and Cupboard

    Hi all
Recently I decided to upgrade and build a new Router table top with some 32mm MDF. When it was finnished it looked sad and lonely on the bare Jarrah frame so I decided to build a cupboard to fit to it.
I am pleased with and results and now have somewhere to store all the bits and pieces for the routers. An idea I had when making the table was to include a built in zero tolerance insert that can be installed by just removing 2 screws and placing the 5mm MDF insert, and for the table insert all you need is a patern bit with a bearing and use the router top centre insert as a patern.
Also for changing router bits the top is hinged with a piano hinge I have used this method for years on the old table so you dont need expensive router lifts.
The top and fence is laminated with formica which I got from a local kitchen bench company this is a good source for laminates because they have so many off cuts that the guy who owns this company donates it to the local TAFE school for the apprentices to use

    Default carcass Photo's

    Hi Groeneaj

Yes I did take some photo's while buiding the cascass I will post them below. The construction as you can see is very basic as it is just 3 boxes built with rebated joints screwed and glued with 40mm top and bottom rails for extra strength, the bottom rails are insde the base so are not visible. The back is rebated in, glued and nailed and the shelving is all ajustable.

    Great effort once again!
I have been studying your fence and have a question. Can that piece of MDF be replaced for different router bits? ie a replacment of a sub fence/auxillary fence?

    Default Sub/Auxillary Fence

Short answer is yes it is the same as a sub or auxillary fence just unscrew the white laminated insert which I leave in as standard when I require a zero tolerance fence I replace it with a blank MDF insert and let the cutter cut it's shape in it and the same is done for the base plate insert.
With both inserts I have made a supply so I can just grab one when I need.

    regards Firey

    Right that's it.

i've been debating whether to buy a router table or make one. Made in china ones are cheap nuff, but that's probably what your going to get. So, you've officially inspired me to make one as well.

    question time.

Are the slide channels anything special? Where did you get them?

The slide and knobs that fit into the channel. once again anything special? where did ya get them from?

    cheers.

Josh, Carbatec normally stock Kreg and Incra channels and other various fittings. I think Carbatec also have their own cheaper channel.

    Cheers Martin

    Default Buying T-track

    Hi Josh

As Martin has said you can get the t-tract and knobs from carbatec I got mine over the internet from Professional woodworkers supply one point I would make which ever brand you choose stay with it because even though they look the same they are not, things like t-nuts won't mix and match.

I also intend to purchase some channel but was thinking I might get a bargain at the Sydney WWW Show. Are there truly bargains to be had, have you seen such things there and are the quality items available at these shows etc?? (I know at camping shows etc a lot of the stuff is the cheaper no name chinese imports which is why they look like a bargain) Only been once before some time ago and didn't really know what I was looking at to be honest.

    Cheers guys

Very nice indeed, I hope to build something like this and this post has been most helpful, mind you the first pic does almost look like you picked it up at Ikea
