Triton routers again
I want a router exclusively for table use. I have a smaller router for hand held use. Triton routers, particularly for above table adjustments, seem exactly what I want but the more I read the more I worry. I have googled "triton problems" and got many hits not only on this site but threads in the USA ( Sawmill Creek Woodworking Community ) and UK.
As a mathematician I know that statistically speaking we have a small sample space here. I know there are going to be more people complaining than praising. Maybe the faults are 1 in a 100. Maybe 1 in 10. Its impossible to tell and other brands maybe worse but you don't hear much about them. I guess the fact that they are expensive leads to thoughts of quality and reliability, not breakdowns but I REALLY want a triton router. Also, the complaints seem to be more recent but that could also be true as more people own them now than 5 to 8 years ago. Could also be true on where they're made now.
Should I bite the bullet and get one (the MOF model) ????? Happy recent triton uses can chime in here.

i have used the middle router 1400 watt in a table for the last several years ... its ease of use is excellent .... in recent times i had a problem with the locking device for the height ... i don't really know why the problem was there ... i have taken the relevant bit apart and it seems SO straightforward ... maybe it need to have the brass bolt replaced (i notice that they now use a silver bolt with a copper pad undeneath it ) parts tra049S and tra049 CP) they are quite cheap but until recently there have been no parts available in australia and i would have had to buy them from england ....
i needed it to be working right now not waiting for ages for it so i replaced it (the router that is) ... i was happy enough to replace it with the same model .... the old one can still be used as a plunge router and now that carbatec are going to have spares i will try to get the replacement parts and see if that was the problem
as i said happy enough with it to replace it with the SAME model ... its ease of use in a table is excellent
regards david

I'm not a big router user but I am quite happy with the (larger) triton router in my router table.

MOF001 owner for almost 2 years. I use it mainly in table mode but also in freehand mode, mainly with jigs. I replaced both 1/4" and 1/2" collets last Christmas as I had a bit move in the 1/4" and a vibration problem with the 1/2". There is also the problem, in the table mode, with the micro adjustment moving if there is vibration but this can be overcome by slightly tightening the micro adjustment after locking the plunge lever.
I call these minor problems and I would buy one again. The 3 year warranty is also great. The only recent problem is the recent price hike.

should you bite the bullet and just buy one? a few months ago I would have said, yeah sure, do it! but now the pricing puts the routers in the same league as bosch and makita. Because the tritons have been good and well priced, I haven't looked at the other offerings on the market. But for table use I don't have many requirements.
1. enough power to NEVER bog down while making fair and reasonable cuts.
2. above table bit changes which can be done with one or less spanners.
3. easy to make fine adjustment with 0.1mm resolution or better.
for handheld use see above plus
- the abilty to set different plunge depths, two is enough.
- smooth and controllable free plunging.
- can accept porter cable style router guide bushes without replacing the baseplate with an aftermarket one (the MOF and TRA fail here, but mine were sub 300bux)

Requirement no 2 and 3 is mine as well but triton's winding height adjustment saves me the expense of buying a rising table and the need to go below the table other than locking the plunger. The triton is the only one has this. I have/had my heart set on a triton but if another $400 router is very close on features and has minimal below table adjustments then I'll become a little more open minded.
I guess triton's 3 year warranty is sort of peace of mind
PS When did you buy yours Bob? It seems, anecdotally, older ones have less complaints.
PPS I forgot to mention that good dust collection is a priority although I know you can build this into your fence on the table

I've had my big Triton router for over 12 years, 99.9% used in a Triton table. I've put big panel raising bits and moulding cutters in it and it coped fine, as good as the DeWalt 625 I was using prior to buying it. About 3 years ago I had to replace the bearings but that's not a difficult job and there is plenty of info online on how to do this.
I've never used a better router in a table and the dust collection is simply unbeatable.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Thanks for that Chief. I will bite the bullet and buy the MOF. Interestingly Just Tools has it for $469 and Carbatec has it for a whopping $623. This isn't the first time Carbatec's price has been beaten easily. I'd rather buy it at Carbatec but for the sake of a 30 minute drive and a saving of $154 I'll buy it elsewhere. I wonder if they price match. I also intend on buying a Kreg insert plate. I hope the Triton router lasts!

What worries me, is the number or lack of who sell it, now that Masters is gone. It's only Carbatec, Just tools and Timber bits. Then again my Laguna Fusion table saw is only sold by a few and that didn't put me off. As long as there is backup from Triton, I'm comfortable.

Timber bits no longer stock the MOF001. Had an interesting talk to David this afternoon re Triton and current pricing. If you want to upgrade to the TRA001, give David a call. Nice guy to deal with.

He's the one that decided not to stock it - not me. I would prefer him to explain his reasoning behind his decision.
