    Default Where is Zero?

Presently setting up the fence on a new Jessem Router table. Each end of the table has an adjustable ruler or 'scale' as Jessem call it. My question is where do you set zero? Is zero the side of the router bit bearing that faces the fence?

Hope you understand what I mean.

My zero point for a parallel cutter bit is when I run a piece along the fence and the bit just didn’t cut. Move the fence back 0.1mm and the router bit will cut 0.1mm

Obviously this point will vary with the diam. of the bit, hence I don’t use scales on my router table

Has to be where the cutting edge of the bit just touches the job piece. Alternatively, If you hold a steel rule across the opening in the fence and moved the fence backwards or forwards so that the cutting edge of the bit just touches the steel rule you will have found zero. Any + movement from that point will then be removing material equivalent to that amount of movement.

My thoughts on Zero, would be anywhere you wanted it to be, fit a different size router bit and the scale is no longer Zero.
I use mine as a guide when I set the fence up and need to increase or decrease, I just use the scale as an indication of how much it has been moved. Move one end 1mm, and at the centre where the router bit is has moved half a mm.
My router bench is a Triton.

    as Kryn says

If you want a definite location, you could set zero at the centre of the router's collet -- but this might be hard to establish, so 100 mm in front of the collet would be my first choice.
After all, on a router table, zero is only a reference, not a definitive measure.

AND, on lower spec router tables, the fence is usually fixed one end!
