Breakdown of components
G'day Phill,
The "cyclone" unit uses the following PVC plumbing connectors from Bunnings,
- 2 x 50mm slab adaptor - $3 each (part no. 54783)
- 1 x 50mm bend - $3.50 (part no. 54785)
- 2 x 50mm male adaptor - $5 each (part no. 56620)
- 2 x Fix-A-Loo rubber connectors as you've suggested in an earlier post - $2.60 each
- 2 meter of 2 inch hose from Carbatec - $11 per meter.
- Ikea Fniss rubbish bin - $3
- 20 liter drum from a friend. I am assuming it will be around $10 but I was unsuccessful in locating them from local paint and pool supply stores.
- Scraps of plywood are used to allow connections for both covers
Item 1 is for connecting to the "cyclone". Picture 1.
Item 2 is the bend for inlet to the "cyclone". Pictures 2 & 3.
Item no. 3 is for connecting "cyclone" to the inlet and outlet vacuum hoses. Pictures 4, 5 & 6 are for vac to cyclone.
Pictures 7, 8 & 9 are for inlet using 2 inch hose.
Item no. 4 is for connecting the regular hose to the inlet. Pictures 10 & 11.
Additionally, item no. 4 is used as an adaptor to the dust hood for my benchtop thicknesser. Pictures 12 & 13.
I can see the stuff spinning in the top and dropping to the bottom when in use and a convincing "klunk" when bigger bits hit the bottom.
I know it is not a true cyclone as the "Dust Deputy" but works well enough for my needs. Thought I'll share the Ikea rubbish bin as a cheap alternative for those looking for a cone shape. Cheap enough to experiment with.
I have actually built one similar to be used with a home vac before upgrading to the Aldi shop vac. Never had to replace the bag of the home vac since.
Currently, I have the shop vac and "cyclone" unit separated right now to allow placing the vac at the back door of the garage. This is so the vac will not be blowing back into the garage. I may look into combining both units to allow wheeling them around.
Ideally, I would like the vac and "cyclone" top to be as close as possible with minimal ducting between them. This may require placing the vac and "cyclone" top on a plastic box with wheels, using the box to store the waste in place of the drum.
Until then, I am very happy with this combo.
Cheers

Gunn,
thanks for the info, it saves a lot of time chasing around, especially since you have done all the leg work and designing. I have an Aldi vac and it is great better most other units that are 3 times the price.
Thanks again.
cheers Phill

I have edited my previous post to add some pictures for the various connection.
Here are some pictures of the top & bottom cover of the "cyclone".
Picture 1 is the fastening of the plywood for the top cover with inlet/outlet connectors.
Pictures 2 & 3 are the fastening of the Ikea rubbish bin to the plywood for the bottom cover, viewed from the inside of the cone.
Picture 4 is the fastening of the bottom cover to the plywood.
Hope these pictures make some sense of the construction.
As always, any comment, critique and feedback is appreciated.
Cheers

Even though I started this thread to give a heads up, I never actually got a chance to buy one.
I want to get one for the auto start feature however Aldi seem to only sell them on the odd chance.
Is there another supplier of these vacs, if so could I please have the details.
Cheers, Andy

Great posts Gunn; thanks.
If anyone's interested, I have a home-made cyclone separator with 10cm ports for a normal dust extractor. You can have it for a $25 donation to charity. Pick up from Reservoir, Melb.Cheers, Ern

The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

A problem has occurred with the charger of his unit. After recharging the battery I went to move the charger unit, battery still attached and it arched a loud bang and it died. Drill still great. I have contacted the warranty people and posting away the details.
Hope to resolve soon.

Replacement Filters
Just a heads up data point.
Replacement washable pleated filters (dry vacuuming) for the Aldi Taurus Wet BT-VC 1500 SA are available from Bunnings - Ryobi Washable Cartridge Filter VC-WF suitable for Ryobi VC30,VC30A,VC30HDA,VC60HDA and VC45DB.
This filter has a bayonet style twist lock fitting to retain the filter on the vac in the centre of the base of the filter. If you look closely at the Taurus vac in the base of the cage for the float there is a rubber plug. Remove this plug and the Ryobi twist lock fitting engages perfectly.
Filter is $29 which is 1/3 of the price of the Vac but if it lasts should be worth it.
I also bought a Ryobi VC-CF Cloth prefilter which also fits perfectly.
Hope this helps.
My first post here - a friend pointed me in the direction of this thread after he had used it to build the cyclone separator referred to for his media blasting cabinet.

Funny. I was reading this thread last night thinking "I wish I had one of those vacs"
Coming home from work today, checking out the hard rubbish as you do for any timber or similar usable items, I noticed a wet/dry vacuum in someones pile.
Chucked a U-Turn, managed to peel my way through all the kids rummaging this fresh pile and picked up a Aldi shop vac complete (well, it has 1 broken wheel)
Asked the guy who was in the shed at the house what was wrong with it and he replied "nothing, my misses sucked up some water with it last year and it kind of smells a little when you use it, so i just put it out"
SCORE!
Got it home and tested it out, works great. Auto startup works fine and has plenty of suction. Vacuumed a heap of sawdust and shavings up with it and no smell was to be had out of it. The filter prob just needed to dry out. I opened it up and no mold or the like.
Im going to hopefully build a cyclone setup for it and chuck it all on a wheel around trolley. Kind of like this one: ShopVac Cyclone Separator
