Default Collection box for DIY dust deputy

I bought the DIY Dust Deputy for $69 from Carbatec today. I'm very happy to see that the Festool vac hoses fit snugly onto the DD ports.

The "standard" DD setup is to mount the cyclone on top of a 20L plastic bucket. This looks like a highly unstable setup to me. A bit of research on Google tells me you need to add MDF reinforcing discs to the bucket lid to stop it collapsing under suction. You also need to mount the bucket on a larger base to prevent it tipping over.

Well if I have to do all that, I might as well just make an MDF box to collect the dust. I'm thinking 16mm MDF with a 400x400 base and about 300 tall. This will be shorter, heavier and therefore more stable than the bucket. I will add castors if necessary. I reckon I'll hinge the lid and use foam tape to seal it.

    Appreciate any comments or criticisms.

    Chris

It'll work just fine but I wouldnt hinge the lid as it will make emptying it a hand full!

Yep, good call! I'll make the lid removable.

I was thinking of mounting one on the outside of the workshop wall, which just happens to be inside the chook run, with a hinged base, to make emptying really easy.

Here's what I came up with:

350x350x350 box of 16mm MDF. Cut the top off 50mm from one end. 4 large castors make it easy to drag around. 28L usable volume. Will fit clips to hold lid on when I can source some at a reasonable price. The Dust Deputy works beautifully. It will pay for itself in Festool vac bags saved in no time.

Well, I dunno... I'm not sure MDF dust will do you chooks any more good than it will do to you. Fortunately, I don't use MDF.

I'd be more worried by the resin/glue that the wood fibres are all glued together with

It's exactly that glue that is the problem - based on formaldehyde of some sort, isn't it?

Nice build Jack, I may have to do something similar. A month or so ago I had a hose blockage and when I looked around the nylon(?) bucket that comes with the dusty has collapsed and the lid had popped. Damn hard to get it back to round again I can tell you I was also thinking of doing a tower to conserve floor space, ie put a box on top of the Vac.
