    Default Cyclone Separator 4"/100mm inlet

    Hi all,

I've just picked up a generic 2hp DE unit and wish to incorporate a cyclone separator using a steal drum which I already own.

Most of the cyclones on the market appear to be mainly for inlet hoses of 2"/50mm.

I've also seen the various units like the Carbatec 85L unit pictured, but was hoping to find a cheaper option that doesn't cost $560!

    Any advice appreciated.

There's not much point having a 2HP DE with a 5" (?) inlet if you're going to choke it back to 4". To then further reduce the airflow with a cyclone would certainly be a retrograde step. You're not going to find a 4" or 5" cyclone at a reasonable price off the shelf in Australia.

Most stock 2HP have 4" inlets plus a bulls eye target screen across the inlet.
Step one - ditch the screen
Step two - modify the inlet and outlet to 6" using the info in the sticky at the top of this forum. This allows you to move a lot more air and hence fine dust.

Adding a cyclone/separator to a small DC you will collect significantly less (~25%) air and hence collect less fine dust.
If you don't care about fine dust then no worries about using a cyclone.
If you do, then you'll need to add some forced ventilation to your shed.
The target spec is ~20 room changes per hour but any ventilation is better than nothing.
Depending on the size of your shed often a couple of bathroom exhaust fans will do.

Virtually without exception they have a 5" inlet and are fitted with a plastic splitter with twin 4" inlets.

Yep agree - forgot about the splitter.

Sorry my mistake, I meant 5".

What's the issue with affordable off the shelf dust collectors in Australia?

There are none made in Australia. They're bulky so the freight to get them into the country is expensive, once you get them here local freight is expensive. The Chinese guy that I used to import them from is no longer in business so the US is the only source that I'm aware of. There are quite a few people making their own based on the Bill Pentz design.

It’s the same here in South Africa. You can’t even upgrade the impellor to something decent, all you get is the same machine with different stickers and paint colours, unless you go industrial and I don’t have the guts to even ask those guys for a quote.
