Thread: Drill press dust/chips

I reckon I could fashion something pretty similar out of PVC pipe.

it looks like it works well enough, how practical it is in the real world is another question. If it doesn’t stay put it could get interesting fast if a drill bit grabbed it. For anyone with three arms I reckon it’s a winner

I just cut a U bracket out of some pine to suit 100mm hose; clamp it to the table, job done.

I just hold a piece of 100mm flex near where i'm drilling.

but I have a sieg mill/drill combo machine.

Basically I echo what the others have said. I don't like the idea of having my hands that close to the bit and having to hold two things down (wood and dust hoop). I'll add that it becomes near useless if the work is anything but flat. The other thing is that the chips of the small drill look like they were not all sucked up leading me to wonder if some fine dust is escaping. I think a bell mouth hood positioned just behind or to one side would be a better solution. If you do try one any chance you have a cheap particle counter to see if any fines escape?

Crikey, where to begin. First up "no mess on my table whatsoever" is bollocks – I had just seen two chips fly out to the back-left.

His drilling technique is dangerous – job not clamped, fingers way to close.

What does he do when he's using a fence to drill a series of precision holes, rather than those random, chewed up shockers?

I guess some people just need to re-invent stuff for the sake of a YT video content to post....

I use a 50mm hose with a very large "crevice tool" connected to my ducted shop-vac. With that drill press he can use auto-start, auto depth-stop (as I do). That means I hold (and move around) the crevice tool, and can continue to do so after the drilling process has stopped, and my fingers are nowhere near the drill bit.

Nup, and I regret giving him an extra view.

I suspect not Pete because the rpm probably isn't high enough to create fine dust. Definitely looks like too-low rpm from the way that small bit chewed the hole.

Definitely looks like creating content and not creating useful accessories is the primary objective.

Good to hear your thoughts, I was alson concerned about lack of secure mounting and its limitations.
more than happy to stick with 100mmbell mouth sucking up what it wants to.

I guess the only concern i still have would be if I wanted to use a spindle type sanding drum in the drill press.

Try the bell mouth hood. Certainly the other "con"traption would be useless for a spindle sander.

I’m the same as Derek, I wouldn’t have the patience, plus there is a lot more to worry about when drilling, then having to flap around with a piece of plastic that is going to get in the way.
I will stick too a two,or is three, thousand year old piece of technology it’s called a brush.

Only time I worried about dust at the drill press was when using a sanding drum so I made a downdraft box. This works really well when sanding but general drilling then it's a brush.

A few years ago I resharpened a carbide wheel cutting bit for Crowie and tested it on some scrap; I very quickly discovered that these cutters throw a truly obscene amount of woodchips around in all directions…

I knocked up a temporary “hood” out of a 90mm stormwater “tee”, some scraps of 90mm tubing and some masking tape. As shown in the pictures it was crude but VERY effective and I churned out about a dozen or so wheels with very little clean up of the area required afterwards.

Making a slightly more permanent/less yee-ha version has been on my gunnadoit list for quite some time… I just haven’t had the need for it yet.

A few years back, shortly after buying a Nova Voyager, I installed a fence designed for removing shavings …



The videos all made this look good, but I could not get these results. Perhaps my vacuum cleaner was not powerful enough (Festool CT26e). It was a nice fence, nevertheless. I sold it and replaced it with a simple version …



I decided that a drill press makes a mess, and just have the maid clean up once done.
