Dust Collection and impeller design
I know that many posts have been made about dust collectors and variations due to Frequency (50/60Hz) duct work size and even mention of impeller design.
I thought there could be some interest in the following experience....
At work (school) we have a 4 kW dusty. Recently it developed some vibration followed by an almighty "bang" as one of the impeller blades let go!!!!! It was a welded one with simple rectangle blades. The actual system is largely "home cooked" by the head of department.
He contacted the manufacturer of the head of the cyclone and they supplied a new impeller with curved and tapered blades (get wider from centre to outside) The motor had new bearings fitted and all reassembled and what a difference!!!!!!!
1. So much quieter
2. Much more efficient... the old system struggled to run two outlets at once where as this one will run 4 or 5 and not only that, it actually works..drop a handful of dust near the belt sander and you can see it disapear....further, it actually works with the thicknesser, the old one could never suck the chips out.
So the only difference is the impeller and it is unbelievably better.
My advice.... make sure you have a good impeller as it DOES make a big difference!
Cheers,
Chipman

Thanks Chipman.
Its amazing the difference between good design and muddling along, no matter how well intentioned. There is some very sophisticated science in impeller design and basic physics in dust extractor layout.
Have you seen http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm which covers both the common sense and physics of dust extraction. Might enhance your teaching notes!
Cheers

Hi Chipman,
Can you advise the name of the company that supplied the new impeller ?
I'm looking into making a cyclone, and it would be interesting to find out what they have available.
I was going to get one of the ClearVue impellers, but the dollar conversion is not as attractive as it was.

I would be keen to know who supplied it as well, is it a local supplier?
