My SCMS enclosure uses two outlets. One is a connection to the saws own dust port which connects to a 50mm hose to a workshop vacuum.

There is a pickup slot at the back of the enclosure

which is is connected to the main system via a 125mm pipe.

The hood slides in for storage and out when using.

Dust collection is very good - nothing out the front at all.

I got 6"grey pvc from Powell industries fit straight over pipe and could get it by the metre.

"I have also started lining my dusty shed, I've done the walls, just got to do the doors and ceiling".

Heybluey. I am about to build an enclosure for my dc and your db figures look good so I was wondering what wall lining and isolation you ended up using.

    Thanks

So I did knock something up this afternoon, see the pic below. I have not optimised anything yet, I just have some flexy hoses sticking though some holes in the enclosure. The three 100mm flexy join up to a 150mm PVC pipe using the 150 to 100 mm adapter that came with my dust extractor when I purchased it. Doing a few initial cuts with this setup the results were not that impressive, the large amount of dust coming out from the 50mm extraction port on top of the saw is not all being captured, it is hitting the roof of the enclosure and dropping down the back wall. I'm thinking of attaching a pipe to the outlet from the saw and sticking it up the 100 mm flexy at the top, what do you think?
I'm guessing some bell mouth hoods would also help. Any other suggestions?

Hey Safari, I used some acoustic rock wool insulation from Bunnings from memory. I then lined with some timber packing crates I had picked up. Essentially the packing crates were roughly 9mm thick plywood. I'm in a bit of a unique position because my dusty enclosure is sandwiched between my shed and my neighbours shed, think that helps with keeping the db down but I'm not sure.

    Hoep that helps.

Thats why I put a separate 50mm line to my DC. Same as the fence on my router table. Sticking the hose into the larger pile will catch the dust from the saw outlet but will restrict the airflow in that pipe and reduce what it can catch in the hood. Been there and tried that

Dave Reed has come up with a simple setup for his SCMS and for the 50 mm pipe from the saw.
I'm really impressed with the overall duct collection given he only has a 2HP DC.

Bob is that a single 150mm hood that the 50mm pipe is plumbed into? I was thinking of doing something similar with the port at the top of my extraction hood.

I do like your setup there. I just want to try and avoid using the vacuum and my extractor at once!

If you have space behind the saw and wanted to improve on Dave's setup I suggest using a 100-150 mm Y behind the BMH and reduce the 100 mm down to the 50mm

I am curious to put a single 150mm bell mouth hood at the base of my enclosure with a 50mm line into a Y as Bob described instead of the three ports I currently have. The flow from the three ports was very underwhelming to me. Off to buy a 150 to 100mm Y if I can find one!

You can't really judge the flow by feel.
I'd be making up a manometer and plugging one end of that into the side of 6" ducting above the saw - measure the pressure for any setup - the lowest pressure will indicate the most flow.

If you want to collect maximum amount of chips cut some wood and watch where the chips go and makes sure you have a duct/port in that spot..

Looks great for a straight cut.
Just wondering how effective this setup is when cutting at 45o left or right? The dust stream is no longer in line with the BMH.

BobLs BMH's are the vortex's of doom!

I use them on the lathe and they are so incredible that visitors to the studio have asked me why I don't turn any more. Looking at the floor and zero dust anywhere they think I've given it up.... well, I do, more than ever! There is next to no cleanup, for a 6" system with one of those BMH's is like a black hole... nothing escapes.

    I'll have to remember that!

Wondering if it should be "vortices"?
