Default Dust collector - extending distance to filters

    Hi

In my dust collector cabinet, i have need to extend the distance between the bags/filters and the motor, similar to the crude picture i've attached. Are there any negatives to creating such a set up, assuming that the extensions are the same inner dimensions as the standard unit?

Good question. Basically, its going to be hanging upside down just in front of a door. I need the bag/filter to be either side of the door to allow access.

I should also add that obviously the bags/filters will be the other way around.

I assume its outside the shed, if not putting an air tight enclosure over it is not going to be that easy.

    Hi Bob

Apologies, im not sure what you mean here. For all intents and purposes its outside the shed... Its basically in an enclosed "room" that i've built and sectioned off, between the workshop and the outside (pipes enter the room from the workshop). The room has direct venting to outside. The room is basically to filter the dust, and act as a noise reducing environment. The door in the picture is the door into the workshop.

The up side to mounting the machine on the ceiling is the straight shot into the ducts along the ceiling without having to add elbows and pipe to bring it to the floor.

I do remember reading an article where someone had raised the DC higher (but not on the ceiling) and had removed the bottom of the lower bag. He clamped it to the modified lid of a small barrel which was easier to remove and dump. it also increased the filter area since they didn't fill with shavings. Something you could consider if your lower bags are fabric too.

Will the chip separation ring/cone, in the centre, work correctly if it’s upside down as in normal orientation the airflow enters below the cone?

From post 3. "I should also add that obviously the bags/filters will be the other way around."

That would mean flipping the ring the right way around.

I have contemplated separating the filter and bags from the blower too, and would be interested in what you are considering using for the extension.

You will probably need to put a shelves under the collection bags as the weight of the sawdust will not be supportable by the plastic collection bags.

Yep, this is the main reason i wanted it (plus i can mount it in the dead space above the door). I'm not actually going to mount it direct to the ceiling though. It will have its own stand-alone frame that holds the DC upside down, as close to the ceiling as possible. This way ill hopefully reduce vibration noise. The frame will also sit on rubber feet which may help.

As pete mentioned, ill be attaching the chip separation ring up the other way, so should work as normal.

I was thinking something minimal like a simple MDF channel with the same square dimensions as the outlet for the chip separator. My main worry was that CFM would be reduced by extending the distance, even if it is a relatively short distance.

Yeh, definitely. Should be able to rig something up pretty easily to ensure it supports the weight when full.
