Just filling in these 3 panels and the bottom would probably be enough.
The two small ones on the side and a larger one on the rear.

[QUOTE'However, my observations are that most of the dust "thrown" around by the saw is released where the laminar flow associated with blade rotation is disrupted as the blade enters the cut. Capturing this dust requires overhead dust collection.[/QUOTE]
Looking closely at the throat plate I see the end of the slot is WAAAAY to close to the blade.
You could test this by lowering the blade and seeing if this improves the dust collection.
However unless the underside of the dust collection chute is rapidly being cleared of dust the blade is liable to drag as much dust up over the back and drag it around to the front of the table

Some judiciously placed holes in the throat plate just in front of that gap can also help. Unfortunately there's not much room to play with at the front of the dealt throat plate. Someone else has posted about this but I can't remember who

You can see how much room I have for my job.

How much dust and small chips accumulate within the saw's blade shroud?
My initial guess is that while not where you need to be, a high velocity / low volume shop vac may collect a lot more dust than the DC and its 4" flexi hose.regards from Alberta, Canada

The main stream of dust comes from under the blade. As the blade guard with the duct port doesn't exist for this saw, so I need to invent something.

It's not just the diameter of the exit port and hoses that determines flow but how tightly sealed the shroud is up against the the underneath of the table top.
If this is not a significant issue then the shop vac would pull about 90 CFM while the DC might draw close to the same maybe 70 CFM.
If it is a significant issue the shop vac might pull 70 while the DC will fall to about 30.
Either way they are both hopeless for fine dust control.

Thanks for all the info, I'm now reconsidering the DC I had in mind - only one of my powered tools, the DeWalt thicknesser, has a 4" port - the rest is shop vac size.

I found the blade guide with the dust port for this saw ! I ordered it and install just today. I haven't tried it yet.
I connected my old 800 w vacuum cleaner to the port but I am not sure it it has a sufficient suction for this job.
So if someone uses the same Dewalt table saw this part is available from Dewalt for around AUS $100.

For the help of others, can you tell us the DeWalt part number?

I ordered this part through a local retail shop which sells these table saws. It arrived a few days later. It was packed in a cheap plastic bag which I disposed on the spot. As far as I remember it didn’t have any particular code but just the name of the part and the deliver address.
So just tell to the salespeople at your local shop that you need the blade guard with the dust port and they will call to Dewalt. It is impossible to make a mistake as it is the one and only part with the dust port. Probably it is a new part as the locate shops still sell these saws with the old blade guards. You can even show them this page with my photos.
