This is fairly typical
Just spent 2 hours at a local mens shed reviewing their dust extraction issues.
Very pleasant fellows.
I first visited them about this time last year and noted.
- 7.5HP cyclonic DC
- 250 mm going down to 200 mmm trunk line a one end of the shed.
So far so good
But
- trunk line at far end of shed dropping to 150 mm servicing 5 large machines
- machines all connected via 100 mm ducting using those crappy restrictive 92mm diam black plastic gates
- several machines connected to a single 100 mm duct, worst was 3 lathes and a SCMS on a single duct.
- lots of Flex in use, including some of that 50 mm flex.
So sang again from the usual hymn sheet, bigger trunk like 150mm ducting to machines, minimal flex, use some BMHs etc etc.
12 months on all they had done was replaced some of the 150mm trunk with about 3 metres of 200 mm.
They had also installed a 16" planer thicknesses and a 24" drum sander using 100mm ducting.
The 24" drum sander was not being used as it was too dusty.
Could not see a gate on that machine and it was not until I removed the ducting to show them how to remove the highly restrictive mesh inside the twin dust ports that I spied a home made butterfly valve - these are absolute no-nos on wood dust DC system.
Sang again from the same hymn sheet, gave them some tips about adding a VFD to their DC, got an order for 12 BMHs - lets see where are in 12 months time.
Not the worst I've dealt with - fairly typical I suppose,

I assume the butterfly valve is a no no because of the physical restriction the butterfly part imposes?
