Yeah I've been busy, babysitting my grandson, spending time in the shed on MW and electrical projects, and on the MW forum - ~50 posts in the last week. I spent most of today as a participant in a Physiotherapy research project. I'm definitely not bored.

I have about a dozen dust related questions but I hesitate to ask because I'm sure it will be Bob answering again, and the answer will be something he's already said a dozen times before but he's too polite to mention it

Spyro Bob's willingness to help seems to be boundless but any of us can reduce the strain on him by taking the time to read through the stickies and doing a few searches in this forum. Should the information uncovered in a search not answer your questions or be old and you wonder if there is newer data on the subject then feel free to start a new thread. Bob will help as he always has and some of the other members may be able to toss in something too. We don't advance by living in darkness, or dust in our case and talking about it helps to bring out new information and solutions.

The forums are a wealth of data and some of it is even useful but sifting the useful "needles" from the enormous "haystack"is betting harder and harder. The search function in most forums is also quite limited and unless you know something about what you are looking for it becomes even more difficult.

Sometimes I find it easier to search using google. If you put my user name, Site:https://www.woodworkforums.com/f200", and a few key words into google that will find any associated posts. Google will enable you to narrow down searches because it allows for the appending of the "+" character to a keyword (this means it must have this key word) and the "-" which means it must not have that key word.

BTW I can find most of my 20,000+ posts that contain photos using a roundabout method involving all the way I store photographs on my computer.
The photos are stored by year, then project type, and then by project. Usually I remember the year I did something in and that gets me most of the way there. Once I find the related images on my laptop I then know the date and the come back to the forums and use the "attachments" list to locate the actual post.
This only works for posts back to 2012 because unfortunately most of the attachments were lost before that year so it becomes a lot harder.

Good one BobL. I have often wondered how you can provide so many links with apparent ease. I never seem to have much success using the forum search engine.
Thanks for the tip about using Google search.

I am overseas at the moment and using intermittent wireless and roaming data, and google/tapatalk searches on the phone dont always work as expected. I tried but hitting dead ends.

I might wait until I'm back but basically I'm just trying to find some basic shop vac info: is there some sort of relationship between HEPA filter ratings (E,H,U) and shop vac ratings (L,M,H)? Is there a list somewhere of all shop vacs that have a rating suitable for wood dust (and what is that supposed to be, M?H?) that are available in Australia?

I know all the other stuff about shop vacs, that they are no substitute for DC, they create airborne dust, should be enclosed and/or vented outside etc.

Just trying to understand ratings, prices and availability in Australia.

Sorry I don't know much about shops vacs other than every one I have tested, unless the have been brand or near new, I have been disappointed in.

Rather than reinvent the wheel look up the HEPA and MERV entries in Wikipedia for a quick guide.
True HEPA ratings are efficiencies of filtration of particle sizes of 0.3 microns and larger.
MERV ratings are different ranges of filtration efficiencies for different sizes of particles.
There are some overlaps but they are just coincidental.

I don't know but somehow I doubt it.

Unknown to most of us Google has an advanced search where you can define by words and domain and other criteria such as language...

Thanks Bob. I've seen the wiki entries, just trying to understand the relationship between the two because some vac desctriptions seem to refer to the one scale (eg M, H) and others to the other ("Hepa H" or just "Hepa" or whatever). Anyway l dont expect much. I am mostly just curious because there seem to be a lot of people who rely solely on one or two Festool shop vacs for their extraction needs. What do you think of that?

True HEPA rating are designated in an engineering/scientific manner with each class (apart from the E10-11) being 10X better at filtering all dust above 0.3 microns that the previous class. Merv ratings appear to be designed to shoehorn various existing products into their best possible class. As more and more is known about air quality air purity is increasingly focussing on <2.5 micron dust so MERV ratings up to about 10 are increasingly irrelevant.

Not much. The only vacuum cleaners I consider really effective at fine duct control are those that are located outside, or enclosed and vented outside a shed. For that nothing expensive is needed, a basic shop vac can usually do the job.

Nah, on thursday I did a dust consult at a local mens shed. They have two 2HP DCs and a generous layer of dust over everything so I got plenty of opportunities to sprout my stuff.

Thanks, the missus has gone horse riding and I just mowed the lawn, put two loads of washing through the machine, and started cooking the dinner.
