Even for a single car garage the claimed 1200 CFM for that size motor/impeller is nonsense, try 400 CFM with the 4" ducting.

Removing the 4" to 6" adapter and using 6" ducting will help but even then the small motor/impeller and the elderly design of the cyclone will never achieve the claimed CFM

In terms of value for money and overall air flow you would far be better off getting the DC7.
This should generate closer to 1000CFM with clean filters and ducting/junctions no more than about 6m in length
Then you could the spare $1000 on 2 pleated filters, 6" ducting, gates etc and you would be miles in front.

Is it better to have the chips and dust passing through the impeller of the fan or to have the chips collected via a cyclone before they get to the fan? I would have thought that there was a potential for things to either block up at the fan entrance or for the impeller to wear due to the abrasive nature of the wood impacting the blades. I used a small "under-bench" (but mounted on a wall above the bench) Hafco dust collector when I was shaping rubber butt-pads for shotguns and rifles and found the "clang" of a screw being sucked up from the workbench at the end of the day quite worrying.

BobL, could I buy a DC7-style machine (https://www.timbecon.com.au/extracti...dust-extractor) and bolt the blower directly onto one of the collectors? The other collector would be stored. Id put a 1220mm tall pleated filter cartridge on (https://www.timbecon.com.au/extracti...ter-cartridges)

They have confirmed both flanges are the same.

6" inlet on that machine - https://www.timbecon.com.au/extracti...dust-extractor. They don't give full spec's, but I'd be surprised if has an impeller larger than 12" and if the outlet is any bigger than the equivalent of the 6" inlet. If you are going to constrict it back to a single collector I doubt you'd be achieving anything better than you'd get from a modified 2HP. I can confirm that both flanges are the same on my TTI DC7. I'll be interested to see what BobL has to say though.

I believe, since modifying my 2hp unit to 6" all the way through the (pump inlet, outlet and seperator inlet), that the single standard filter bag is too small and is increasing back pressure. I'm actually having problems keeping the filter bag on the separator. It's now attached with a standard spring loaded clamp, tied on with a draw string and taped on. The lower bag is spring clamped and taped.

This is a good point and shows that modification and initial testing is one thing but working with modified units over time is needed to show up other issues.

I can under stand why space restriction may prevent fitting a taller bag but a small pleated filter should still fit - is the issue not being able to find a PF that fits?

One pleated filter should have about the same restriction as two needle felt bags of the same external dimensions.

It's all to do with $$$$$$$ I'm afraid. $230 is a lot dearer than $30
On another note, it's amazing how quick the dusty can pollute a shed when the filter blows off. It was literally 15 secs from the time I noticed a change in dusty noise to the time I opened the dusty shed and it was everywhere. It showed me that when it's operating alot of what's in the lower bag when it's not operating is now swirling around above the separator.
Glad it wasnt in the workshop.

Would a downward facing inlet help? Like on the new cyclonic separators where the inlet is angled down at 15°?

I have a wok (yet to be fitted) but some people says it's great others say it's lousy. Hoping someone with the Jet unit (that has a plate fitted) could chime in and give us an idea of the dish diam vs the diam of the hole in the separator and the distance down. You think Carbatec would be suspicious if I went there with a ruler?

I did have a thought about getting a cardboard drum (still waiting to hear back), putting that below the separator instead of the bag and fitting a Thein separator 1/2 way down . I have one hooked up to my Vac and it works great.

Both my DC7's have woks. Diameter of the inner hole in both is 250mm. Do they make a difference? Don't ask me, I've never run either of them without the wok's.

Not sure I understand what you mean. Outside diam. is 480mm, which I think is pretty standard for generic 2 and 3HP DE's. They are both like a wok with the centre cut out, there's no offset. Hope that helps.
