Pickups from a combo belt/disc sander
Hi folks,
I have a generic 6x9 belt/disc sander combo, which looks very similar to this one:
L107 | L-69A Belt & Disc Linisher Sander | For Sale Sydney Brisbane Melbourne Perth | Buy Workshop Equipment & Machinery online at machineryhouse.com.au
I can't figure out a good way of getting dust extraction for the disc. So far I'm just running with a long piece of 4" flexi jammed in under the table, which is better than no extraction at all, but not by a lot.
A quick search of the forum bought up what looked like a decent solution from BobL in this thread:
Dust extraction from a belt/disc combo sander
but it won't work for this sander without substantial modification - the cover for the drive belt sits underneath the disc (the black cover in the H&F picture), which prevents running a piece of PVC around the bottom half of the disc like BobL's setup in this thread:
These sanders seem pretty common, so I'm hoping someone smarter than I has come up with a good solution - any ideas, folks? My best idea at this point is to cut away a big chunk of the disc cover and bring 6" PVC in at about the 7-8 o'clock position on the disc... Which would probably be easiest if I do a workshop reorganisation, so I'm hoping there's a better way!
Thanks,
Danny

The existing dust extraction ports on the sander look like very late afterthoughts, so I can see why you need to improve the dust pickup. Could you remove the front cover from the belt housing and replace it entirely with a new cover that builds in a 4" or 6" line? If possible I'd use 6" to each side (ie disc and belt) as you will not be using both sides at once. You'll need blast gates of course.
Good luck and keep us posted. I've got a different linisher but will need to go through this process soon.

I think that's my best option so far, thanks Trav! Makes me wish my metal working skills were better - will probably have to try to knock something up out of perspex.

These machines are notoriously poor at dust collection.
If it were mine i would look to replacing the 2" with 4" ports or removing the existing ports and make up a single cowling to take a 6" port in between the belt and the disc as you said at the 8 o'clock position

As it happens I'll probably never make any progress on this, because I couldn't resist a deal on a second hand belt sander! The combo will go out to my Dad's shed, which doesn't have any dust extraction.
As a final update in case it's useful for anyone else, my final plan was to cut out most of the cover (that sits over the bottom half of the disc, the drive belt, and the spindle coming from the motor) and fit the corrugated end of this:
https://www.masters.com.au/product/9...0mm-galvanised
onto the housing and remains of the cover. I had one of these elbows sitting around anyway, and the corrugated end of it pushed into shape to match the housing easily. I think it would have worked pretty well, although I would have had to either cut or ventilate the guard around the disc to allow enough airflow, and I'm sure it probably would still have been a bit restricted.
