RDC 1500 Renegade 1500W dust collector.
Hi all. I'm looking at the RDC 1500 Renegade 1500W dust collector. Moves nearly 1500cfm of air, 2 100mm outlets. Are these any good? If they are, I'm looking at a dedicated hose for the thicknesser and the routing table. The other can go to a manifold set-up with smaller hoses for the sanders, drop saw etc.
Thanks for your help.

Suggest you read the 'Sticky' - The Generic 2HP DC - at the top of the Dust Extraction sub-forum. You will then be much better informed. There's a wealth of information there.

Manufacturers/agent/retailer might say different but it's a rebranded generic 2HP.
Treat the 1500 CFM like the zero to 100 kph claims on motor bikes, ie with a massive tail wind and a 40kg rider.
A single 100 mm outlet will not have enough flair flow to collect enough dust from a drop saw or sander.
As Adlav suggests have a read of the sticky to see what needs to be done to a 2HP DC to even get it close to satisfactory.
Then 150mm ducting all the day to the machine and machine ports opened up to get enough flow.
BTW a manifold is not a good idea (too turbulent - ends up restricting flow) and you'd be better of plumbing in each machine with 150mm ducting and modifying the DC as per the Sticky.
A workable alternative that might suit is is a swinging boom arm as used by fletty.
Note use of 6" ducting - he should be using 6" ports on machines - but at least his main ducting is 6" and he can upgrade the ports later.
Fletty's new shed WIP ....or is it a retrospective??

Ok...eye-opener! Thanks Bob and Aldav. What unit would you recommend for a garage workshop? Shavings, chips and the ever present dust! The piping etc, I am all over that like a fat boy on doughnut. It's the unit that I am having trouble finding. Need to do something real soon. The missus' eyes are getting darker by each day.
Thanks guys.

It's a double garage, but no cars in it except mine when I fly back to work. Secondly, yeah, I am FIFO so 2 weeks at home, 3 away. Garage is open to the north and roller door to the south. Lastly DC has to be inside, boxing it is not an issue and vent can go straight in to the compost heaps on northern side. I'm in suburbia too. Largs Bay. Not in the country mate.
Thanks Bob.

Ok, given all this there are several strategies that could be employed and things to consider.
Firstly DC location and venting orientation:
If the DC can't go outside then enclosing it and venting is the next best thing. But you can't vent out of the same opening that your fresh air comes in or all the fine dust will immediately be sucked back into the shed. The vent has to be opposite the major air inlet point which for you is the permanently open north end of the shed
The best option will be keeping the roller door closed and venting near or under roller door which will drag fresh air in from the north open end.
You could make up a panel that lifts the roller door up say be 200 mm that has a 150 mm diameter hole in it and vent through that. This will create a cross flow that will reduce fine dust coming back into the shed.
An alternative wood be to close off the north end and vent through their and crack the roller door to let fresh air in.
Next what DC to use.
Strategy 1:
Then unless you are prepared to modify the 2HP DC etc you should go to a 3HP or more DC that has a 150 or 200mm inlet. You will still need to use 150 mm ducting all the way to the machines and modify the machine ports to use 150 mm. This will give you the best result.
Strategy 2.
Use the 2HP as is, stay with 100 mm ducting and machine ports and use it to mainly collect chips and visible dust - ie the stuff that doesn't really hurt you. In addition install forced ventilation to continually vent the fine (invisible) dust from the shed. You work how much ventilation you need by targeting 20 room air changes per hour. You may not be able to get 20 room air changes per hour but ant will be better than nothing To do this you will need a couple of 10 or 12" BIG/QUIET/ EFFICIENT fans. I recommend using the Impeller type fans used by the Hydroponics people, they are quiet, use little power and move a lot of air. These fans should be turned on when sawdust is being made and left running until you leave the shed. I would still enclose the DC and vent it outside. The air flow orientation of these fans should match the air flow direction set up for the DC. If you use this method I'd still be wearing a mask for dustier operations like sanding and thicknessing but at least once you have finished those you could wait for 5 minutes and then be able to remove you mask.
