    Default SCMS Enclosure

So I finally got around to building an enclosure for my SCMS. It's surprising how large the enclosure needs to be to accommodate every combination of mitre and bevel.

Below is the enclosure as it stands. I still need to put a roof on it.

And a closer picture of the vent at the back.

    And a look underneath.

It's not perfect. I still end up with a bit of sawdust on the table. And I don't have the means to measure how much fine dust still ends up in the air. But it's a heck of a lot better than my old system, which was to let the dust spray wherever it wanted and then run the externally vented DC for a while. I still run the DC for a little while after making a cut anyway.

There's a 6 inch hole just behind the saw which connects to a 6 inch duct beneath the table which runs off to the left along the floor and out to the dusty. I've also hooked up a 4 inch line which gets reduced to 2.5 inch and connected to the back of the saw. I'm not sure how much this really does, but I was surprised (before making the enclosure) at how much dust goes out through this. I've had the flexy attached to the saw for a while and even with no DC hooked up the saw still pushes quite a lot of dust through the flexy. So I thought I may as well keep it connected. I doubt that the additional 2.5 inch line is stealing much suck from the 6 inch.

A simple 6 inch hole at the back is not ideal. I'd prefer to have some sort of very large bell mouth hood. But until BobL starts shipping his BMHs to NZ I'll just have to wait. And in any case I don't have much space below to work with.

I just wonder if you need a roof on it - if you are only getting a bit of dust on the table. A roof won't contain the fine dust - it'll just spray everywhere anyway.

I just tend to think that a roof will reduce light, which can be dangerous or at a minimum a PITA.

I vote for a roof - and also having the roof come as far forward as possible.
A roof will reduce the vertical "draw angle" for air from 90º to about 60º which will speed the air up a bit through the front and help collect a bit more fine dust.

A clear roof would help with light.

Thanks for your thoughts. I reckon I will add a roof then. The saw has to sit quite far forward unfortunately to get the clearance (even with the special rail system on the hitachi). Which means that a roof that only goes out as far forward as the sides might not do too much.

I'll test out what the lighting is like with a roof that comes quite far forward. Fortunately the lighting in my garage is now quite good, particularly where the saw is. So light will hopefully not be a problem. But I'll see once I've placed a roof there.

You could always add an LED strip underneath the roof.
