Screaming hose on Dust Extractor
Hi,
I've set up a simple dust extractor using an old vac and a drum seperator. I've used some black flexible hose that's agi pipe but without the slots (like this stuff). The unit works brilliantly, but the hose absolutely screams. (It's definitely the hose, not the vac itself). It's an incredible noise that is going the have the neighbours sick of me in no time.
Has anyone else had this problem? I'm wondering if its caused by the spiralled ribbing in the hose

Hi, yes it has come up a couple of times before, you should find the threads if you search for it. Maybe search "howling dust extractor" or resonance.
Cheers

The plastic on the hose is very light and rigid compared to most vacuum hoses, which also have ribbing. Its resonant frequency is therefore achieved with far less force than would be required for a heavier, softer walled hose.

Might be a bit crazy, but try throwing some old towels on it to cut the vibrations

This won't work - just like a brass instrument it's the air that's vibrating not the pipe. The ribbed hoses have more points of instability along its length that set the moving air vibrating but any hose vibration does not contribute to the sound you hear. Rather the vibrating air makes the hose vibrate
You could try changing the length of hose but that will probably just change the frequency of the scream.

I have been down this road before. Yes, ag pipe is cheaper, but it makes a horrible racket. Buy proper dust collection hose and read about my misadventures here

Thanks guys,
I'd done a bit of a search through previous posts, but didn't think to search on "resonance". Wish I'd looked harder before I bought the hose
The verdict seems to be that in my attempt to save a few $s I've actually wasted a few $s. But maybe I'll have a use for some unslotted drainage pipe sometime in the future (more "stuff" for the shed in the meantime).
I'll try breaking up the length by putting in some sections of other pipe but may have to fork out for the proper vac hose.
If I get some free time, I'll start work on that conduitaphone. The neighbours will enjoy the experimentation
Cheers All
Pete
