Do I need shielded cable when connecting a Powtran PI8100
In the "Guide to using a Powtran" page on the Clearvue Aus website it states "It is preferable to use a shielded cable for this linkto avoid any radio interference."
How important is this given that the workshop is 50 metres from the house? What might cause interference for a Powtran?
The reason I am asking is that there is a $100 cutting fee for Shielded Cable, wether you need 1m or 20m. Does that sound feasible? I am connecting to a 3kw motor about 2m from the Powtran.

Give that distance and the length of the cable I wouldn't bother.
There are 8 machines on inverters in my shed and it is not unusual to have a couple running at the same time - none are using shielded cable.
The shed is ~ 10 m from our house and about the same distance from 5 other neighbour's houses.
The radio interference caused by these inverters inside the shed is pretty bad and it interferes significantly with AM radio reception but the shed is Colourbond and seems to contain most of the interference inside the shed. It also kills WIFI reception from the house
I can hear the interference immediately outside the shed on the AM band but it drops off rapidly with distance and I cannot hear the noise on the AM band up at the house.
As far as radio reception inside the shed goes I switched to a digital radio and this works fine.

Hi,
You could install it in metal conduit, the flexible stuff known as Anaconda by the sparkies.

Anaconda is around $300 for a 15m roll and $30 each for fittings.
I wouldn't bother with screened cable for a short run. Those were the droids I was looking for.

A filter can be used also, NC Archer would know more than me about this as I have no idea if they are a generic style of thing or not.

I wonder how well stainless steel shower hose would work as shielding?

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will just use normal cable & if there is a problem later, then I can fix it.

I would not bother with the shielded stuff. I used unshielded on the CV and it does not cause any interference. My run is short and the cable length is only half a metre tops.

Filters are used on the input side of the drive and prevent noise from being radiated via the power supply cables to other electrical equipment. Not usually a problem with such small drives.
If RFI is a problem, the easiest things to do are to enclose the VFD in a metal cabinet and use a screened cable or a metal conduit from the VFD to the motor.
As Bob said a small VFD at home may stuff up the radio reception or make your WIFI drop out in close proximity to the VFD but probably not much else.
Any electronic controls you may have in other machinery will be enclosed in a metal case or protected from RFI in other ways. Those were the droids I was looking for.

Mine was killing the neighbours' WiFi as well as ours, beyond that I have never had any feedback from other users during the time I was selling cyclones.

It is timber framed with Hardie Plank cladding and Cliplock roof and it is a lot further to neighbour's houses than a house usually is. The original VFD committed suicide for some reason a while ago so when I replaced it I put a filter in line as well and the problem went away.
