Bob one of the main reasons I want to run larger pipe is, like Neil I wood turn amongst other woodworking. I want to be able to collect as much of the shaving, chips and especially the very fine dust as I can. I also on occasion use a couple machines at the same time. Saw a strip off a board with a bandsaw then joint flat. Repeating until done. Opening/closing blast gates will get old in a hurry. Still the 6” pipe isn’t common in this area either. Not sure why but I suspect it is because the ground can freeze to 6’ or more deep over the winter and the thin wall pipe doesn’t hold up.
Neil I think I’ve had the link to that calculator for at least a decade. They improve it from time to time making it better. I’ve never tried it side by side with Bill Pentz’s spreadsheet but don’t think it would differ much.

Yep that makes sense.

Unfortunately I missed that online calculator if it was about when I was doing my initial design back in 2005. It was hard to gather together helpful information back then.
My stroke of good luck came with Bill Pentz's work and website, just in time for me. As I recollect, Bill's advice at that stage included the duct sizes required for various workshop garage sizes (usually in the form of the number of cars it displace) but I'm not sure it included the more detailed calculator that is now on his website.
I'm very grateful for Bill's work and generosity.Stay sharp and stay safe!
Neil
