Table saw port/pickup upgrade WIP
A bit of a run of improvements so here's what I am upto with my TS,....
the dust extraction from the factory is a hose that is coupled to a close fitting shroud right at the blade under the table then out to an adapter in the side of the machine to which the user attaches a connection, from a design point of view it's a bit lacking....there's not a lot of space around the shroud so I suspect this limits the flow into the hose, when doing a cut at 45° the hose impinges on the side wall of the machine and has to bend severely, to replace the hose and fit it onto this shroud is a right PITA, long thin pieces get stuck inside the hose and cause a build up of dust, the hose is about a metre long so helps with the general restriction to flow, so after a few repairs and generally getting annoyed with it, off it came.
This is no solution either as although there is some dust pickup from off the bottom of the cabinet via my connection it doesn't take long before it's a mess, so the beginnings of hopefully a solution, basically the idea is to take a tapered section from under the blade out to the connection point, there will also be other sections added to help direct dust into the tapered section.
Pics....
It will be 125 size pipe so enlarging the original hole was required, for best flow this should be 150 but 150 would have interfered with the movment of the spinle moulder inside the cabinet, on the outside there will be a 90° bend with a floating flange that will pickup the original threaded holes, a trick the boilermakers use is to centerpunch the marked out line in case it dissapears, it does help, inside the cabinet there is a rib that I am using to fit the right hand side of the floor section up against and the round end will fit upto the hole I have enlarged, I have to make all the pieces small enough to fit thru a narrow gap and then assemble it inside the cabinet.....just to make it a bit more interesting

inside saw cabinet dust collection
A little more done, a few pics....
1st pic: Looking thru the access door with the tapered floor section in place, if I did nothing else this alone would be a huge improvement.
2nd pic: Looking thru access door again at the large curve front section, the dust from off the blade should hit the curve and be directed into the tapered section, I am going to leave the original hose attachment point on, I think it will help but we will see what happens.
3rd pick is view from above and beside the saw
Last is looking thru the outlet into the tapered floor section,
Looking at these pics I know what I am looking at but I can see how some of them seem to be a bit dissorentating
A few more panels to go inside and of course some pipework to change.

Looks like a lot of work Pete.
It's a bit hard to envisage what's going on from the photos.
Maybe a pic of two further back, even of the whole saw would be useful.
A space between the pics might also make it easier to see what is going on.

Hi Pete:
Thanks for making the effort to come over to my shop. It was a lot of fun talking dust extraction. I'm amazed at all your sheet metal work, and look forward to seeing how it comes together. No doubt, there will be more to learn (on my part)!Warm Regards, Luckyduck

Completed TS pickup
After a bit of an interruption with a cyclone and stuff I managed to get back to this, as usual a few pics....
I had to take the pickup out for a final trim, so I reassembled it on the bench,
components.jpgassembled .jpgass. 1.jpgass.2.jpgass.3.jpg
I then reassembled it inside the cabinet, hopefully for the last time!! The first pic is taken from the opposite hand.
bare internal.jpg1st .jpg2nd.jpg3rd.jpg4th.jpg
and then made up some pipes and connected it all together, I was going to have the floating flange on the bend but I decided that I would put it on a short piece of pipe and then the bend as per normal.
thru machine.jpgshort pipe.jpgpipework.jpgpipework2.jpg
and then I had to try it out, so far looks good, I did make a slight mod which can be seen in the video, will post that later.

video
Uploaded a short vid to utube of the dust off the saw blade, there's not a lot of dust to see, I was cross cutting a piece of ~40x40 pine but you can see what is happening, in the above pics the curved rear section doesn't have any sides on it, however, the left hand side butts up to the sheeting inside the cabinet and I thought I would see what happened with the right hand side, first testing showed that dust was escaping to the cabinet, the dust coming off the saw was splaying out where it hit the curved section, so I added a vane to the curved section at an angle, my thinking being that it should tend to act like a venturi and suck additional air in from the cabinet on the right hand side.
The other interesting thing is that you can see random bits of dust flying about and from what I can see disappearing quickly.

How about now? By default a vid uploaded to utube is public, not sure how it came to be private? Video manager says it's public.
