    Default Thien Top Hat Questions

I have a Hafco 2hp dusty and am considering adding a Thien Top Hat separator in an attempt to reduce the number of bangs with large bits hitting the fan. But some questions.

Most uses seem to be machine related eg waste from a table saw, planer, bandsaw, linisher, etc. I do a fair bit of dark side stuff which results in considerable hand plane shavings which are bulky, and I am concerned they will not drop through the standard 1.25 inch slot in the baffle resulting in blockages. Is this a real or imagined problem?

Secondly, on the inlet port I have seen numerous versions from 100mm duct attached to adaptors mounted on square 100 x 100mm ports to 100mm ducts attached tangentially as well as others. Does the shape and size of the port matter?

    Thanks

    It matters a great deal!

There is some basic info here J. Phil Thien's Cyclone Separator Lid w/ the Thien Cyclone Separator Baffle but on the discussion forum there are many people who have made 100mm versions and have posted their results... Thien Cyclone Separator Lid Discussion

I built a small Thein separator for my vacuum cleaner. It had 35 mm pipes. It was built roughly following directions with the gap being bigger than 1.125mm and the 90 degree pipe positioned roughly on the plate. It worked O/K.

This year I decided to build one for the outlet of my 2HP system using 100 mm pipes and a 200 l drum. It is connected in parallel with the standard dust separator and pleated filter. I joined Phil's site and had some discussions and built it exactly to his specs. It works great.

I pick up plane shavings with the unit but they generally get taken by the normal separator before they get into the Thein. The small unit, with the 35mm pipe, has never had a problem with shavings, it can take through the pipe, getting stuck or not getting past the gap to the bin below.
